Haven’t been able to run in the evenings due to a combination of the normal evening thunderstorms we get this time of the year and the puppy not being able to be left by herself while the wife goes to get the kids from VBS (she’s getting worse & worse about panicking during storms. She’s destroyed a few doors / frames in the past week). So even doing the treadmill at the Y has been a no go. So I decided to get up an hour early today and run. Blech. One, the humidity was oppressive. At 80°,...

But last night I ran 5k. It was on a treadmill because there was a rather nasty storm going on, so it doesn’t exactly count as a real 5k, but I managed to run for 35 minutes straight, covering 3.1 miles. The thing about the treadmill is the road is being ripped out from under you, which lowers the amount of effort you have to put in, but it does still require your cardiovascular system to be able to keep up. I’m proud to say my leg muscles were the part wearing out before the lungs & heart...

I’ll take “Things that can’t be said about my adventures on the treadmill last night for $500 Alex”. Probably ate too much for dinner, but at 2 miles I started cramping up and by 2 & 1/4 I was done. Which was really embarrassing since I was doing 3.5 miles with no problem last week. Hopefully Friday will be better.

Since getting tendonitis in my right elbow/forearm, I’ve managed to use that as an excuse to stop exercising. Stupid, but it’s amazing how easily we fool ourselves into getting out of things like that.  The Mrs. and I are doing a Couch to 5K plan, which we started right before we went on vacation, and we didn’t consider all the hiking we did in the TN mountains to be slacking off, but I picked up a rather nasty cold the day we got back and was out of commission for over a week and a half....

Like pretty much any activity in your life, getting out of practice can leave one rusty. Often we look for substitutions for the activity, but that doesn’t always work the way we hope. Take running for example. Over the summer, I had given up running outside because the heat & humidity made it painful. Instead I took up indoor cycling (aka Spin Class) and hit the treadmill a few times. I was doing spin twice a week and a weight class twice a week (low weight, high rep). The work has paid...
