No. No you do not. And why do you not see that man over there? Because he's wearing a Ghillie Suit. Got an email last night from a gentleman who runs the Ghillie Suit Source and, being that I'm more than happy to help spread the word for small companies who sell products I can approve of, I figured I'd give them a link. FTC Disclaimer: The Ghillie Suit Source has provided no product in exchange for this link. Because Ghillie Suits can be considered 'pants' and we can't have that around here.

Reading about that horrible accident with a 50 BMG upper, I was reminded that Zel Custom Manufacturing recently had to recall some of the 50 BMG uppers they make. I emailed Michael Brendzel about them because I was curious to know more about the issue they were having. Michael was kind enough to respond We discovered that ours, too, could bind when (1) the bolt handle is threaded longer than nominal, (2) the bolt is narrower than nominal and (3) the operator overtightens the bolt handle...

Michael Brendzel of Zel Customs (makers of the Tactilite uppers for your AR) asks Tactilite - The Affordable Fifty I wrote earlier that my goal for 2010 is to mainstream the .50 BMG.  I've gotten a few questions about that and a few folks got defensive, so I thought I'd clarify.  I think most people would agree that most shooters view the .50 BMG as an exotic caliber.  For many of those people, it's something that they would like to try.  Maybe even own.  But the...

So, I've already complained about last year's dearth of firearms purchases. This upcoming year doesn't look to be any more promising. One of my biggest issues is that technically speaking, I've got all my 'needs' covered. Shotguns, Evil Black Rifles, .22s for training, CCW pieces, revolvers, competition rigs, etc. I don't need anything. So, considering that I might only get one chance at purchasing a firearm this year, what should it be? Here are some things to consider. First and foremost, I...

JayG takes his newly acquired lightsabers lasers out for a spin and has an astute observation One thing that jumped out at me as I was shooting with the laser sights was that it wasn't a panacea for shooting issues. I had expected to sight the laser in on the X-ring, then be able to chew out the X with boring precision. It doesn't work that way at all - things like smooth trigger control, sight picture, etc. are still important and can still wreak havoc with your shooting even with a laser...

The Firearm Blog has a post up regarding Magpul's new Angled Forward Grip. This is something that looks very interesting to me as I've never liked vertical grips on any rifle, especially an AR pattern. If you look at the picture of me from Blackwater using the Para USA TTR, you'll notice I completely forgo the front grip and grab pretty much in the same manner (however I had to grab much closer than I prefer mostly because the forward grip was in my way). Definitely something I'd like...

When I was at Blackwater, I spoke with Patrick from Crimson Trace regarding green lasers. He mentioned the drawbacks of them (basically you have to filter the laser, making it somewhat wasteful on energy) as well as the plusses (visibility being one of them) and said they were working on some stuff at the time. Looks like that time has come. Awesome! Unfortunately, my evil plans to procure a KRISS turned into kitchen cabinets and granite countertops, so I won't be able to pick up a Crimson...

95 caliber rifle. This is the beast it shoots  - the .950 JDJ The .950 JDJ has become something of an internet legend, and is frequently cited as an example of a "ridiculously large" cartridge, thanks to its overwhelming ballistic figures. The cartridge drives its aforementioned 3,600 gr (230 g) bullet at approximately 2,200 ft/s (670 m/s). This yields a muzzle energy of 38,685 ft·lbf (52,450 J). Even the recoil junkie in me cringes at the thought of lighting one of...

Links to these companies are not paid links nor do they confer any sort of endorsement. I know there are weasels out there who think I'm some sort of paid shill, but the link section is simply for those companies I wish to...

Went to Dick's this weekend to sign the youngest up for soccer. While I was there, I went by the ammo counter. Outside of the one caliber I needed (.380 Auto), the shelves were packed. This is good. The prices had gone up, which isn't as good, but that is to be expected. They didn't have any large boxes of .22 that I like (Remington Golden Bullets work the best in my .22), but they had them in other brands, so that's at least good. Dick's has decent prices on #7½ shells too if you buy them...

So… anyone have any thoughts on Stoeger? I was looking at their Condor Competition Over Under for sporting clays. $600 isn't ridiculous, especially considering the costs of many other shotguns, but I know nothing of Stoeger. If I were to get an O/U, I'm not looking at getting the top of the line model. My main concern is utility. I want to pull the trigger, have it go boom, pull the trigger again, and have another boom. Anyone have any experience with Stoeger or other suggestions?

Recently I've blogged about Tactilite and their 50BMG upper for the AR. Well, they've gone and made an upper in .416 Barrett (the only known caliber capable of making Chuck Norris flinch) ODESSA, FL (August 9, 2009) – Due on the success of the Tacilite .50 BMG, Zel Custom Manufacturing has released, today, a new line of Tactilite that convert a standard AR-15 into a .416 Barrett bolt-action rifle. So, in my fantasy world where I actually have some cash to spend on toys, I've been thinking about what I would get if I had a few grand sitting around and could purchase a nice, new gun. Sure, I'd love a BMG and some year I think I might do it, however I'm still locked into the more practical mindset – I want something I can shoot the heck out of and would have a good use for. I don't hunt, although I'd really like to, so a nice hunting rifle would do nothing but collect dust. So, I've...

The Chain SAW It was designed to have the ergonomics of a chain saw, and the firepower of a SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon). It’s based on the idea that heads up displays no longer require a gun to be held up to the face for aiming. Theoretically, this type of grip could be applied to many different weapons in the future. Somewhere, Josh Sugarmann just took a harder look at his nightstand.

Ruger's new product? A gas piston AR. A little underwhelmed, especially given we saw the bolt a few days ago and it was clear it wasn't a DI system. Look for the recall in 3…2…1… Maybe it's decent, I don't know. All I do know is that after firing the Para TTR, I wanted it with a passion. If I'm going to spend 2k on an AR, it would be that. But let's hope Ruger does well in this regard. It's a saturated field, to be sure.

I'm not a tacticool kind of guy. I've always put function well over form in practically everything I've owned, from cars to guns. I don't care about pretty shotguns, I want one that works. I don't need 65 attachments hanging off my AR-15 because it's what all the cool kids are doing, I just want to be able to place shots on target (a laser? That's acceptable). However, there are times when my sense of "If it doesn't have a use, I don't need it" can be overridden. The KRISS Super V...
