For Christmas, my folks got us a ‘grow your own mushrooms’ kit. I love gifts like these because they’re fun and things you’d have never thought of buying yourself. The kit is from Back to the Roots in case anyone is interested. It comes in a box with everything you need. You remove a panel off the front, make a cross cut, take the bag out and soak it for 24 hours, then put it back in the box. In a few days, you start getting edible fungus! This is day 4 of growing, although our kit took...

I have lots of pictures and will be doing a step by step write up for the betterment of all the Interweb tubes later on this. Once installed, I was in gun-nerdvana. Here’s the thing - I love the way the Apex AEK feels in my M&P40. It’s a glass-break and the lighter spring is smooth and easy. However, I didn’t realize that what I really wanted was the Forward Set Sear and Trigger Kit. I was under the impression that the difference between the two was the physical trigger, but that’s not the case. The sear is totally different. So, what I’m thinking is that I don’t want to eat $95 and then turn around and spend another $150+. I’d be willing to sell my...

This isn’t the forward sear set, but the competition action enhancement kit (which I just realized are two different kits). Uptake is still long, but smooooooth. Went to Dick's this weekend to sign the youngest up for soccer. While I was there, I went by the ammo counter. Outside of the one caliber I needed (.380 Auto), the shelves were packed. This is good. The prices had gone up, which isn't as good, but that is to be expected. They didn't have any large boxes of .22 that I like (Remington Golden Bullets work the best in my .22), but they had them in other brands, so that's at least good. Dick's has decent prices on #7½ shells too if you buy them...

So… anyone have any thoughts on Stoeger? I was looking at their Condor Competition Over Under for sporting clays. $600 isn't ridiculous, especially considering the costs of many other shotguns, but I know nothing of Stoeger. If I were to get an O/U, I'm not looking at getting the top of the line model. My main concern is utility. I want to pull the trigger, have it go boom, pull the trigger again, and have another boom. Anyone have any experience with Stoeger or other suggestions?

Recently I've blogged about Tactilite and their 50BMG upper for the AR. Well, they've gone and made an upper in .416 Barrett (the only known caliber capable of making Chuck Norris flinch) ODESSA, FL (August 9, 2009) – Due on the success of the Tacilite .50 BMG, Zel Custom Manufacturing has released, today, a new line of Tactilite that convert a standard AR-15 into a .416 Barrett bolt-action rifle. The Tactilite, a complete upper assembly that allows a user to quickly convert an AR-15...

AA15 Lower Receiver (Stripped) $100.00. Buy 5 or more for $85 each Anvil is who engraved my AR. I wish I had known about them before I purchased my lower, I'd have saved quite a bit of money.

So, in my fantasy world where I actually have some cash to spend on toys, I've been thinking about what I would get if I had a few grand sitting around and could purchase a nice, new gun. Sure, I'd love a BMG and some year I think I might do it, however I'm still locked into the more practical mindset – I want something I can shoot the heck out of and would have a good use for. I don't hunt, although I'd really like to, so a nice hunting rifle would do nothing but collect dust. So, I've...

The Chain SAW It was designed to have the ergonomics of a chain saw, and the firepower of a SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon). It’s based on the idea that heads up displays no longer require a gun to be held up to the face for aiming. Theoretically, this type of grip could be applied to many different weapons in the future. Somewhere, Josh Sugarmann just took a harder look at his nightstand.

Got an email yesterday from the makers of a nifty little AR-15 accessory. It's the Tactilite, a .50 BMG conversion for the AR-15 rifle (www.tactilite.com). It's a single-shot, bolt-action .50 BMG upper that fits right on top of the standard AR lower. Helooooooooo sexy! Let's look at some of the awesome features of this thing of beauty It's a 50 BMG. I could stop here, but it keeps getting more awesome It fits right on your existing upper From the email I received, their midrange...

Figured I'd put my shopping list online so I can remember it easier. Hoppe's #9. Brake cleaner 10mm bore brushes .45 caliber bore brushes. cleaning patches that actually fit. I'm getting tired of trimming down what I have to fit the .22 brass catcher for the AR 6.8SPC brass Fresh batteries for the Crimson Trace grips on the Para. some sort of brushes that help get in all the nooks and crannies. The Mark III 22/45 is as bitch to clean. a better range bag. Actually,...

Cameron's house, from Ferris Bueller's  Day Off is for sale. Being that my two cats are named Bueller and Sloane, it's pretty much inevitable that I purchase it. Anyone have $2,300,000 they can spare? Hat Tip Traction Control, who probably could buy it.

Ruger's new product? A gas piston AR. A little underwhelmed, especially given we saw the bolt a few days ago and it was clear it wasn't a DI system. Look for the recall in 3…2…1… Maybe it's decent, I don't know. All I do know is that after firing the Para TTR, I wanted it with a passion. If I'm going to spend 2k on an AR, it would be that. But let's hope Ruger does well in this regard. It's a saturated field, to be sure.

The Big Brown Truck Of Happiness showed up today with a package from Crimson Trace. Inside the packing peanuts and receipt was, lo and behold, a laser sight for my Kel-Tec P3AT.   Inside was everything I needed to help bad guys make informed decisions. Batteries, swabs, Allen wrenches, and of course the laser unit itself. The laser clips onto the forward portion of the trigger guard in two halves. Here you can see the innards of the light amplification through stimulated emissions of...

I'm not a tacticool kind of guy. I've always put function well over form in practically everything I've owned, from cars to guns. I don't care about pretty shotguns, I want one that works. I don't need 65 attachments hanging off my AR-15 because it's what all the cool kids are doing, I just want to be able to place shots on target (a laser? That's acceptable). However, there are times when my sense of "If it doesn't have a use, I don't need it" can be overridden. The KRISS Super V...

I was talking to Patrick Harlan over at Crimson Trace due to a comment left here the other day from Homer And, Robb, thanks for you and the other bloggers at Summer Camp. After reading all your reports I bought a couple Crimson Trace grips, one for my 1911 and one for my student CZ75. It's taking some time to learn, but with the laser as a learning tool I'm teaching myself to get the muzzle on target right out of the holster. Now I need to get one for the USP in the shoulder rig. While I'm...
