Man with a gun at a girl scout meeting

Cool down period
So, it’s that time of the year where the temperatures are dropping below 70°. Little known fact - In Florida, that’s the temperature at which blood freezes. This means shirts with long sleeves and possibly a light jacket to prevent frost bite (which, in Florida is a danger below 62°). Interestingly, because we’re still in a warmer climate, concealed carry doesn’t change much when the temperatures drop. I still wear my shirt untucked, I don’t have bulky jackets that could conceal a shoulder...

Why would you ever need a gun in a church?
Because crazy doesn’t respect holy ground Officials said the suspect, Jeremiah Fogle, shot and killed his wife, 56-year-old Theresa Fogle, in their home before bursting into the nearby church, opening fire and seriously wounding the pastors in Greater Faith Christian Church, located at 2035 West Parker Street in Lakeland.

The budding gunnie?
I love my wife. Utterly and endlessly. It’s a sickness, yeah I know. As a married man I’m supposed to do nothing but complain about her, but that just doesn’t happen. I love her even though we don’t see eye to eye on the whole gun thing. My wife was solidly in the neutral camp when I started getting all gun-nutty. When she met me, I had a rifle and a pistol and that was it, and that didn’t bother her at all. She wasn’t anti, but she surely wasn’t “pro”. She went with me a few times to the...

Everywhere else but here
Florida is only 1 of 6 states that disallows firearms in non-sensitive areas of an airport The Federal government has determined that the "sterile area" is the "sensitive place" at an airport but Florida has gone much farther and banned even licensed carry inside the entire terminal, on this topic Florida is one of the most restrictive places in the country. Emphasis mine. I didn’t know this a while back. I may have even blogged about committing a felony....

I’m the worst person to ask for advice on this
Shelly talks about how to conceal guns. Me? I carry a full sized Glock 20 with no problems. In fact, I found the full sized Glock carried more comfortably than the compact G29. Then again, I’m 6’3”, two hundred and some pounds and, being a Floridian, tend to wear looser fitting clothing anyway. With my Comp-Tac Minotaur I can even tuck in my shirt with little issue. The only time I’ve been printed, though, was when tucked so it’s not my favorite form. I’d prefer OC, regardless.

Man with a gun reported at a children’s museum in Tampa
Today in Tampa, it was reported that a man entered the children’s museum, heavily armed with a high power assault handgun and his two daughters. Eyewitnesses claim the man must have concealed the powerful pistol because nobody was able to get a good look at it. He apparently spent several hours entertaining his children and not shooting the brats running around, screaming their fool heads off. The Brady Campaign released a statement saying they had no comment unless there was a considerable...

Discretion
So, yesterday during the bi-weekly dev meeting, someone brought up guns and how someone he used to work with got fired for bringing one to work. The discussion switched to why would anyone need a gun at work which then devolved into the general disdain for people who carry a gun. I said nothing. There’s a time and place for everything. I try to keep my personal life and work life separate. As much as I’d have loved to dropped into a discussion about rights and how I pose no danger to anyone,...

My pseudogynecomastia notwithstanding
I don’t think this is the right holster for me, but for you ladies out there, Naturally Concealed seems to be an interesting idea. Naturally Concealed is a homebased business brought into being by one woman's desire to find a comfortable, concealable, discreet handgun holster that could be worn under dress clothes as easily as it could be worn under every day work, play, or exercise clothes. After coming up with what I believe to be the perfect concealed carry option, I decided to share it...

Numbers so small, you’d think they represented the percentage of truth in a Brady press release
The Florida Department of Agriculture is the licensing agency for concealed weapons permits. Because nothing grows oranges faster than packing heat, I guess. They have a nifty chart showing exactly how many licenses have been granted as well as those that have been revoked. Now, the anti gunners want you to believe that guns in the hands of normal people are a bad idea because CCW holders are milliseconds away from poppin’ a cap in someone’s ass over the last tacquito at the Quickie Mart. The...

The accidental criminal
Well, I just committed a crime. My oldest is selling Girl Scout cookies at the local grocery store and her mother had forgotten her sash, so I picked up my youngest and headed over. Today it’s right at 80° so shorts and a light t-shirt were all that was required. Since we were out of bread, I went ahead and picked some up while I was there. Putting my youngest back in her car seat, I was required to lean over to get the belt buckle in. A light breeze came by and managed to push my shirt...

Forward progress
Wyoming senate passes Constitutional Carry. Still has to go through the House, but it looks good for Wyoming. We at Florida Carry are paying close attention to these events and will be following in the footsteps as time goes on. Our first goal is to get Open Carry legalized. While Constitutional Carry is a great goal, it wasn’t something that was politically feasible. A bill to demand Constitutional Carry would not have seen the light of day whereas the bills for OC and adding teeth to...

Pocket carry sucks
But Chance explains how to make it suck less with a review of the Executive pocket holster. For my pocket carry, I prefer to rely on “Oh dear God, don’t make me have to fish this abomination out of my pocket and have to actually shoot it” rather than any other thing that could make it easier.

Same tune, different key
From Say Uncle comes this story about UK Soldiers* Cadets not being able to carry their rifles because they might ‘upset’ some people. I seem to be having the same conversation about open carry with nominally ‘pro gun’ people. Don’t carry openly because you might upset people!!! OH NOES! Because there seems to be a black hole in some people’s understanding of my position, let me clarify it here – I want Open Carry to be legal here in Florida (and in every other state, but I can only work...

What better way to restrict the rights of the poor?
Just make the licensing fees for a right so high they can't afford it! Glad to see this in the article What's more, Nobles points out, is that gun ownership and concealed handgun licenses don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. Texans can legally keep guns in their homes and cars without a license. And then there are those who don't care what's legal and just carry a gun anyway. NO WAY! That's unpossible!!! I thought stringent licensing requirements with their associated fees prevented this...

Because getting shot is probably not high on your list of things to do
Michael Bane gives some wonderful advice in his podcast on how to deescalate a scenario if you are 'made' to be carrying a gun. I'm glad I listened to this because honestly, my stubborn ass would probably go into full Threeper mode trying to assert my rights, blah blah blah and thus, increasing the risk of being shot. In some situations, sucking down one's pride and simply leaving is the best option. We carry guns to protect ourselves. We do the exact opposite by being dicks in a situation...

I believe introductions are in order
Agent Franks, Internet. Internet, meet Agent Franks Click to Embiggenate "Bad werewolf," Franks said from the entrance. "Sit." The werewolf swung her head to assess the interloper. I slammed the jagged end of the pool cue into her throat. It was like a blood explosion. She howled in sudden agony, claws flying to the would. Franks raised his Glock and calmly put a single round of silver 10mm through her brain, ending the scream forever. She collapsed. ...

Another day, another malfunction from my Glock
I'm starting to tire of my Glock failing on me so often. I had to go to the bank to pick up the paperwork needed for my refinance. There I am, sitting patiently while they print out reams of dead trees showing the connubrated rate of income to fibbocinal interest and my Glock cannot even be bothered to take control of my mind and force me to go on a wild west shooting spree where I run out of the bank with full bags marked with a $ and loose dollar bills fluttering about. I mean, guns cause...

The racist roots of Concealed Carry
Amazing what a little historical perspective can add to the conversation Thinking about the history lesson that McDonald tells, it is also worth considering the extent to which gun-rights activism itself has been distorted by this history. If you look at Second Amendment-equivalents passed in state constitutions during the mid- and late-1800s, a bizarre number of them refer to concealed carry. Incidentally, this seems to be more true of states in the South than in other places; indeed, the...

Yes, it was my fault and yes it was negligent
*Sigh* I guess it happens even to the best of us. I was in Dunkin Donuts this morning getting some coffee and munchkins when I reached back to get my wallet. Apparently, my shirt had snagged on my holster and viola… I had a negligent Open Carry. There was a line, and I had been standing there with the Glock out where everyone could see the whole time. I noticed the gentleman behind me was looking at the pistol when I de-snagged my shirt. I gave him a smile, said "Oops" and covered...

This is good news
Florida to speed up CCW process. Mine took so long I had to write the Governor. I got a call from Charles Bronson's office immediately after. Apparently, Mr. Bronson is very pro-2A and was working hard to get my CCW out (amazingly, it showed up in 2 days). Seems like they're trying to get them out even faster. My idea is still solid – I apply for the permit. I get the card immediately. They run the background check. If I'm a criminal, they now have a reason to come arrest my ass. Delaying the...

I admit it. I certainly didn't expect that
Today had me heading over to Walgreens' walk in clinic. I've got a slight boo boo on my foot that I needed tending to and it wasn't anything that I needed to hit the doctor for. A nurse with a good book on "For bump A, apply salve B" was all that was required. I've been here a few times and truly think that these little walk in clinics are a godsend. I don't need the $250+ visit for a scratch / scrape / rash. Most of those things I can take care of myself, but alas this particular...

So, a pastor is calling for an open carry event at his church in Ky. According to his words "This is for anybody that believes in second amendment rights. And that is the buttress to first amendment rights," said Pagano. Sounds great until you get to the details People can come into the church wearing their gun as long as the weapon is unloaded and in a secure holster. Sorry pastor, but this is nothing short of a publicity stunt then. You are telling the world that you...

Totin'
So, being that I'm at home today telecommuting, I decided to test out the KelTec P3AT in shorts that I normally have issues with when carrying. I loaded the magazine (no round chambered) to make sure the weight was pretty much what it's going to be when I do carry it around and shoved it in my back pocket. You can't see it and I forget it's even there. The Blackhawk wallet for it not only fits nicely, it 'anchors' the pistol into the right position for drawing and stays behind upon doing so.

It's in the public's best interest
This quote is beyond asinine But Leveritt emphasized that it's also in the public interest to ensure that dangerous people aren't granted concealed-carry permits. "The most important thing is to keep these permits from falling into the hands of convicted felons," Leveritt said. "And if that is what you want to do, there is nothing worse that you could do than to hide the names of the people with these permits." Emphasis mine. Let's think about this for a minute. We...

Hurdles
If you look back on this blog just two years ago, you'll notice I rarely posted about guns. Heck, a few years before that and it was all politics (ah... the salad days of 2000+ daily hits), then I simply was aimless for a while. However, I began to realize that it was in my best interest to be able to defend myself if need be. Now I am 6'3", two hundred and something pounds, walk with a purpose and make eye contact with people, so I don't project "EASY TARGET", but that doesn't preclude me from...

Another law-abiding gun owner story
So, the eldest of the crotch-fruit had her Fall Festival on Friday which was a lot of fun. It was held at the local high school's football field, so being a school function on school grounds, it would have been illegal for me to carry my concealed firearm (my father the cop, however was under no such restrictions). So, assuming I was a law abiding gun owner and disarmed, how exactly did that make those kids any safer? I tried to look for the invisible force field that kept the criminals out as...

Why do you shoot?
Roberta X asks How about you? Why do you shoot? Why do you carry, if you carry at all? I shoot because I find the action of shooting to be relaxing. There's a Zen-like state one can achieve when target practicing. All the variables come into play - trigger control, breathing, stance, grip - and you can find that thinking of any of them will throw you off. You have to almost go on automatic pilot to get them all to play well together. When one of the variables is off, you concentrate on that...

Florida concealed weapons permits soar The number of Floridians with permission to pack heat has jumped nearly 50 percent in three years. In 2005, one year before the state Legislature's decision to provide anonymity to people holding concealed weapons licenses, there were 347,350 active permits statewide. Now, that number has swelled to about 520,000. This equates to 1 person in every 35 has a permit. Oddly, we've not seen a 50% increase in gun crimes, especially from permit holders. The...

Victimless felonies
I've bitched about this before, but being that this is my blog I'm free to repeat myself (as well as say things over and over). The one thing the government has a legitimate claim to do is to punish criminals. Unfortunately, they've discovered that this is hard to do and instead have created a labyrinth of laws so complex that ever last man, woman, and child is guilty of something. Then, when the politicians' numbers are too low, they arrest a grandmother who purchased a set of...

I wonder if this counts as printing?
So, the wife and crumb-snatchers are out for the evening, and being that I'm on call I couldn't be that far away from a computer, I got to skip out on the event. Instead of having free time, I sprayed the house for bugs, mowed the front yard (what's left of it... dammit), moved all the furniture, and cleaned some firearms. Usually, I have a bad habit of breaking down the firearm between shots and cleaning them, but oddly I hadn't cleaned the Glock in quite some time. So now, you could perform...
