The Line is Here. No, Wait - Here. How About Here?
Florida sucks. This November we have not 1, but 6 Constitutional Amendments to vote on. Lucky us, there was originally 9 to ponder over, but we've managed to whittle it down a few. Only one actually removes power from the state government but is worded in such a way that even I had misread it and was planning on ticking off No. We've got deleting provisions that allow the Legislature to regulate private property of illegal aliens, preventing gays from being as miserable as heterosexuals, wind...

Higher Gas Prices = Less Police Presence
(Cross posted at The Line is Here) Reading the local dead tree paper this morning (someone leaves a copy in the men's room every day, I don't actually buy one), there was a letter to the editor bemoaning the fact that because of the high gas prices, the police department is having to cut down on the amount of driving the officers do. Imagine that. What really burns my Bundt cake was the writer's whining that he and his neighbors are having to set up a neighborhood watch and *gasp* protect...

Incoherent Rant Included At No Extra Charge
I shouldn't blog angry, but if I took the time to calm down before I wrote anything, you'd get biannual posts and like it. So, this morning I'm talking with a friend at work. Said friend (we'll call him "Sally") is a flaming Democrat. Sally tends to be fairly even headed and not a complete socialist twat, but he still has that core belief that for every problem, the is an equal and opposite government program to fix it. To Sally, the government is a benign entity that only can be corrupted by...

You Want to Know Why I Dropped the R From My Voter Registration Card?
(Cross posted at The Line is Here) Because of shit like this The statute was introduced by Florida Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, a Republican from Miami. His bill requires motorcyclists to "maintain both wheels on the ground at all times." ... "When I saw that, I said, 'I've got to do something -- at least bring attention to it.' " No, you nanny-statist POS, you don't have to do anything about it. Yeah, it's dangerous, but guess what? Natural selection has a great solution already in place and it...

The Men in Black
(Cross posted at The Line Is Here) I've said it before, tyranny will enter this country not at a federal level but at the local level. And the people who are more than happy to bring it to you will be the police. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Springfield's men in black are returning. The city's new police commissioner, William Fitchet, says members of the department's Street Crime Unit will again don black, military-style uniforms as part of his strategy to deal with youth violence. Fitchet's...

Not So Safe
(Cross Posted at The Line is Here) Poor Mr. Otto. You see, Steve is a columnist for a local rag and opines daily on everything. It's what they pay him for. I get the pleasure of reading Steve from time to time since some gracious soul leaves the paper in the last stall every morning. The increased stress from reading the news helps, I guess. Anyway, today Steve whines in his article called Our Safety Net Slipping Into a Nightmare There is an assumption when we sit down in a restaurant the...

An absolute must read
Mad Rocket Scientist takes on one of Heinlein's misused quotes "An armed society is a polite society". Oddly enough, he takes the pro-gun side to task in a way that is eye opening and refreshing. I especially love the comparison to the navy and how each and every person on a ship is responsible for putting out fires although there are "dedicated" damage control teams to our professional police force and the responsibility we all have in fighting crime. Give it a read. It's worth your time.

Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?
(Cross posted at The Line is Here) "Who watches the watchmen"? For the longest time, I believed that the increases in technology that allow us to take a picture, a video, audio, or any document and have it on the Internet literally within seconds would promote freedom to a degree never before seen on the face of this planet. Now that we are not slaves to the media and can find whatever information we want at any instant in time, we can keep closer tabs on our representatives and those in...

Even Orwell Would Be Shocked
(Cross posted at The Line is Here) Last night I took my oldest to the Strawberry Festival in Plant City, Fl. It's your standard carnival - rides, $8 hot dogs, and loads of extremely overweight & slovenly people eating deep fried funnel cakes. And police. Lots of police. In bullet proof vests and riot gear. Now, most of the police walking around were your basic white shirt Sheriffs. Of course, their utility belts would make Batman jealous, but I can understand cops being around. Of course,...

Why the Village Burns
(Cross Posted at The Line is Here) Ian Coburn, a NIU Alumni, shares his views on the recent shootings. And I happen to find what he says quite in line with what I preach here. "I am drained from these shootings, the feeling of helplessness they bring, the fear they create which hangs over every campus like a dark cloud, and the net cast out for causes which always comes back empty of solutions. Instead, it is filled only with speculation, blaming everything from video games to guns to the lack...

Tyranny in Red Tights
(Cross-posted at The Line is Here) There's a saying that goes, "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." In The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis talks about a tactic the demons use to ensure people won't believe in them which gives them a better shot at their soul. If any faint suspicion of your existence begins to arise in his mind, suggest to him a picture of something in red tights, and persuade him that since he cannot believe in that (it is an old...

Real Nut Wants to Ban Rubber Nuts
(Cross posted at The Line Is Here) Oh, this is just classic State Del. Lionel Spruill introduced a bill Tuesday to ban displaying replicas of human genitalia on vehicles, calling it a safety issue because it could distract other drivers. Oh really? A safety issue, eh? I'm assuming Mr. Spruill has reams of documentation showing vehicular accident reports with the main cause as "Driver was hypnotized by pair of large, dangly, hot pink testicles and ended up running off the road." Right? Or maybe...
