Concealed Weapon holder foils robbery. This is good. 81-Year-Old Man Hits Bull’s-Eye On Intruder An 81-year-old man shot and killed a masked gunman during a home invasion early this morning at a residence north of Brewton, Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith said. The sheriff said the robber had been released from a Nebraska jail just two days before he was killed. Smith declined to identify the homeowner, but said the man and his wife were in bed in their home along U.S. 31 north of town about 3 a.m. when the intruder kicked in the...

So, recently I've been seeing these crappy ads for Broadview Security on TV. They're taking over the Brinks company I guess. Each commercial shows a woman at home alone and some guy smashing down the door and invariably, hightailing it once the beeping of the alarm starts. See here for an example. These commercials are utter crap. The threats are real (although probably not as cliché as the ads make them appear), but the sense of security of a beeping alarm and a reassuring phone call are,...

So, I'm reading on Facebook a series of posts from an old high school buddy on how his wife was attacked in their neighborhood yesterday. They got the perp, but lo and behold, he happens to live in the same hood. So, he's going to have to worry about this eventually when the thug gets out / off / escapes or whatever. Someone suggested in comments that he get a shotgun, and while I'd love to chime in and agree, I can't. Now, I've not spoken with this guy since I was in school and I cannot tell...

It's "Should I carry my own reloads for self defense?" Damn straight you can. Nobody has yet showed me a single case where a person involved in a shooting was convicted solely on the basis of hand loaded ammo. Will some unscrupulous prosecutor try to make that an issue? Of course. Their job is to put you away, guilt be damned. And if you didn't reload, they're going to make a case that you used hollowpoints, or +P ammo, or that the 9mm was "high capacity", or any number...

OK, it's not really that simple, but this is an interesting thought-experiment California self-defense laws allow people to use reasonable force (and even violence) to protect themselves against an attacker. The threat must be immediate and a person must use no more force than is reasonably necessary to thwart the attack. But what if someone starts a fight? Can he claim self-defense as a legal defense against criminal charges? Basically, the point is that if Person X starts the fight...

InSights Training has a surefire post to get the caliber wars running again. The take away point is this: Round count is largely meaningless as a predictor of cartridge effectiveness without a lot more context. So take what “statistics” you read or hear about regarding self-defense and ammunition with a huge grain of salt! I can hear the 9mm and .45ACP commandos gearing up now. The main point to the article is that if you can carry more rounds, you're going to shoot more. The guy with 17...

Casa de SaaM is not a tactical house, and it is one thing that I never considered when I bought it. It's basically the letter L with the girl's bedrooms at one end and ours on the other. The only entrances are at the crook of the L, so if there's a break in, it's most likely going to happen between my daughters and I. Using rule #4, I know what lies beyond which parts of the walls. I've determined safe areas that won't cover where my daughters are most likely to be in case of needing to fire a...
