Need a smile put on your face?
Remember the story from yesterday about the gentleman who defended his life with his gun, killing one of his assailants? Then the picture here should make you smile A man who appears to be the homeowner (pictured left) returned home shortly after 8 a.m. and started cleaning his driveway of the blood left behind by the assailants.

Having a gun is not a magic talisman
It will not ward off evil spirits or vanquish those who wish to harm you. What it does is in increase your chances of surviving an attack A man returning home from work was met at gunpoint overnight. Little did suspects know, he was armed with a gun of his own. It happened around 12:30 a.m. in the driveway of a quiet Ocoee neighborhood. The homeowner, identified as Dave Henry, got out of his car and may have been pistol whipped by the suspects, according to police. Police said one...

It doesn't fly here either SEATTLE - Three unarmed security guards were following orders last month when they stood by without intervening as a 15-year-old girl was badly beaten in a downtown Seattle bus tunnel. Emphasis mine. Just following orders? Excuse me? There is a 15 year old girl being beaten half to death and you're just going to stand there because you're afraid of getting reprimanded? Cowards. Quote of the Day
Crazy homeless guy attacks lady. Cops show up and use a taser to no effect. Crazy guy charges cops. Cops decide to shoot. Breda makes a very, very salient point Clevelander Rita Ciofani's friends say she had dedicated her life to helping the poor and vulnerable. But as she lay dying, those sworn to protect and to serve used deadly force only to defend themselves. Tasers, pepper spray, and all other non-lethal weaponry may sound good on paper. Often enough, they're not effective. If we...

You can't dial 911 when the phone doesn't work
With the proliferation of cordless phones, the requirement for electrical power to make phone calls is more and more of an issue to consider during an emergency. Cell phones are a good backup, but calling 911 on a cell doesn't let the police know where you are. My phone is Internet based, and my internet connection is on battery backup (both the connection itself as well as the routers needed to connect everything). I have a corded phone in the house so that calls can be made even if the...

Close call
Caleb got mugged over the weekend. A cup of coffee and a .25 changed the entire outcome. I'm glad to hear he is ok. No shots fired (unless you consider the ballistic application of coffee a 'shot'), and the bad guy got the message. I'm glad Caleb kept his head about him and didn't put two in the chest followed by a headshot (then show clear, hammer down, reholster). As much as I hate the criminal element in our society, I do not wish to see death dealt if it can be avoided. I too have had to...

Because a loud noise is all you need
So, recently I've been seeing these crappy ads for Broadview Security on TV. They're taking over the Brinks company I guess. Each commercial shows a woman at home alone and some guy smashing down the door and invariably, hightailing it once the beeping of the alarm starts. See here for an example. These commercials are utter crap. The threats are real (although probably not as cliché as the ads make them appear), but the sense of security of a beeping alarm and a reassuring phone call are,...

If it's not caliber wars
It's "Should I carry my own reloads for self defense?" Damn straight you can. Nobody has yet showed me a single case where a person involved in a shooting was convicted solely on the basis of hand loaded ammo. Will some unscrupulous prosecutor try to make that an issue? Of course. Their job is to put you away, guilt be damned. And if you didn't reload, they're going to make a case that you used hollowpoints, or +P ammo, or that the 9mm was "high capacity", or any number...

Hey, just because I started the fight doesn't mean you get to hit me
OK, it's not really that simple, but this is an interesting thought-experiment California self-defense laws allow people to use reasonable force (and even violence) to protect themselves against an attacker. The threat must be immediate and a person must use no more force than is reasonably necessary to thwart the attack. But what if someone starts a fight? Can he claim self-defense as a legal defense against criminal charges? Basically, the point is that if Person X starts the fight...

Hornet's nest. Stick. Some assembly required
InSights Training has a surefire post to get the caliber wars running again. The take away point is this: Round count is largely meaningless as a predictor of cartridge effectiveness without a lot more context. So take what “statistics” you read or hear about regarding self-defense and ammunition with a huge grain of salt! I can hear the 9mm and .45ACP commandos gearing up now. The main point to the article is that if you can carry more rounds, you're going to shoot more. The guy with 17...

Tactical feng shui
Casa de SaaM is not a tactical house, and it is one thing that I never considered when I bought it. It's basically the letter L with the girl's bedrooms at one end and ours on the other. The only entrances are at the crook of the L, so if there's a break in, it's most likely going to happen between my daughters and I. Using rule #4, I know what lies beyond which parts of the walls. I've determined safe areas that won't cover where my daughters are most likely to be in case of needing to fire a...

A FANTASTIC read!
Bullet efficiency from a coroner's perspective. Here's a sample I see an average of 8.2 autopsies per day/365 days per year, and I can tell you that when the chips are down, there's nothing that beats a 12-gauge. As for handguns, the name of the game is not only shot placement but how a properly-placed bullet acts once it gets there. I've seen folks killed by a bb to the eye and others survive after being hit by several well-placed rounds with a 9mm. As for me, I'll take a slow-moving .45 to...

When you call 911
Make sure you don't talk too loudly. You wouldn't want to wake up the operator. 911 - Like Vegas only the odds are even less in your favor. Do you have a backup plan in case 911 fails for you?

So much for the blood in the streets
One of the common talking points of the PSH crowd when it comes to promoting the ideas of Castle Doctrine and Self Defense laws is that people will simply shoot their neighbors and use the excuse of being "in fear of their life" and simply walk free. John Gutmacher points to why this isn't the case The question was squarely answered as applied to an "unreasonable" belief in the recent case of Hill v. State, 33 Fla.L.Weekly D. 1038 (Fla. 3DCA 2008), where the appellate court held that there is...

Quote of the Day - Roberta X edition
But remember, human rights are inherent. Governments may make the free exercise of them awkward but they can only impede; even when penalized or barred, your rights exist. Such a great point. Hobsonian as the choice may be, you still can exercise your rights at any time.

To fight
Two articles have really caught my attention so far this weekend, and they both are relevant to me in some way. First is this illustrative story from Breda. One day last winter, I pulled on my boots, buttoned up my coat and went out into the snow to fill the birdfeeder. We kept the seed in a large bucket in the garage and when I went to scoop some out to carry to the feeder, I noticed that the supply was running low. It was dark in the garage and even darker in the bottom of the bucket. I...

I guess we can skip that whole separation of church and state thing
Churches in Minnesota win another round on gun ban Court of Appeals: Churches can lawfully ban guns from their premises. Court agrees to exempt religious institutions from the 2005 law. In another victory for churches wanting to ban guns from their premises, the state Court of Appeals issued a 32-page decision Tuesday agreeing with the district court that religious institutions are exempt from the so-called Minnesota Citizens' Personal Protection Act of 2005. Exempt. Meaning they're better or...
