I'm not sure I would label that mixture as 'gunpowder'....... But it DOES make a wonderful smoke-bomb. In the 8th grade (a LOONG, long time ago) saltpeter was a LOT easier to come by and my Jr Hi school used to get filled with that smoke on a regular basis. At least until the routineness of the act became passe'.

Craig, it most definitely isn't what you and I would call gunpowder, but it is a precursor that is relatively simple to make. A little more effort and you could readily have something that would produce enough gas fast enough to use in a firearm.

Might not be as reliable as the store bought stuff, but the point is that everything that makes a firearm can be made at home with the right equipment and thus, bans are as useless as a book on economics is to a Congressweasel.

Pff. When I was a kid I mixed black powder using proper salpeter(from spice packets bought at the grocery store), charcoal(for barbeque grill), and sulphur(from a paint shop, 1kg jar).

The only step I skipped that prevented it from being real proper gunpowder was boiling the mixture and crushing the resulting cake... I just mixed it in proper quantities(with a mortar and pestle) and used as is.

I never did use up that jar of sulphur... went to hazardous waste disposal years later mostly full.

Btw: I had the recepie for more proper modern gunpowder, but even back then, nitric acid was a pain to get ahold of, for a kid of 12 years old or so..

IE: Nitrocellulouse, dipping cotton in a mixture of 3 parts nitric acid and 1 part sulphuric acid.
