A mutual acquaintance of mine had his home burn to the ground in a wildfiire south of Tucson last year.

The guns in his safe were ok, but he had to leave in rush and left a half-dozen milsurp rifles in the home outside of the safe, a couple of which were family heirlooms.

They were a complete loss. The furniture was gone and the metal annealed to the point they were unsafe to fire.

They are a VERY good idea.

Awesome. I'll point out one thing: there was clearly smoke intrusion into the safe before the heat-activated seals in the door cooked enough to expand. The top shelf stuff is pretty grimy and stained, and you can see the outline of a box that had been pressed against the back felt in the middle level. The papers on the lower-middle shelf appear to be intact.

So here's the advice: if you're going to keep important papers in a safe like this, keep them (A) in a separate container, and (B) on a lower lever (not bottom, as that's likely to get wet).

I actually keep the truly important stuff (birth certs, deed, etc) in a Sentry fire box inside the big gun safe.

Don’t forget to bolt it into the concrete foundation AND the wall studs.
I failed to do this with my 800# Fort Knox safe, and it was stolen!
Nothing has surfaced – none of the firearms, personal checks, or credit cards.
I suspect they never got it open – it’s abandoned in the desert somewhere.

DirtCrashr, there are manufacturers who will sell you a safe in pieces that you assemble on location.
