And outside the $#&*( shower….

The new tile is only a week old, and last night after taking a shower, I noticed some water near the floor. The Warden wife calls me later and there’s another spot.

The water has to come from a source. These must be

  • Seeping through 4” of concrete, travertine, and grout and finding a large tear in the floor pan that mysteriously appeared after the floor was finished. I seriously doubt this is the case because a 5 minute shower wouldn’t have poured out that much water.
  • Coming from the pipes in the wall on the far left. This is where the Mrs’ vanity will go, but if that was the case, then we’d be seeing more water from further in, which isn’t the case.
  • The pipes that feed the shower. I cut a hole behind the mixing valve through the drywall and checked for moisture. Inconclusive, but the cover plate on the inside of the shower was wet on the inside, so this might be the culprit. If so, it means it dripped down between the backer board and drywall (explaining why it’s dry above the floor). It then could ostensibly traveled around the shower toward the front, under the tile where it was visible on the bare concrete where the vanity will go.
  • Or, it simply came out where the threshold is when I moved the (temporary) shower curtain that was there. This is the best case scenario.

I’ve got a big floor fan blowing over the whole area to dry it out a bit. I’m going to run some tests later with the mixer valve, turning on the water and capturing it in a bucket, isolating a leak in the floor, to see if it drips. If so, that will suck because that thing is welded in and will require a plumber to remove and replace it (I’m not that handy).

If not, then I’ll run a test by pouring a cup of water at the threshold and seeing what happens in a few hours if I just leave it there. If the same spots are wet, then that means it simply was from me exiting the shower.

If neither of those are conclusive, I’ll run a hose through a window and into the floor for 10 minutes or so and see if anything is leaking there. This is worst-case-scenario, so pray that this isn’t what’s wrong.

Sometimes home ownership sucks. Luckily I’ve saved for both a rainy day, and a wet floor.
