Looking for RO’s for Ladies' Day at Central Florida Rifle and Pistol Club.

Range Time

This is a really popular course and they’re looking for some help in the RO department from anyone in Central Florida who has NRA Instructor and/or RSO, IDPA/IPSC, SASS. LE or Glock RO ratings who would like to participate to introduce women to shooting. All they can promise is a free hotdog and soda lunch, a busy day (we had over 400 women arrive last year), and a sense of satisfaction from introducing women to shooting. They have 15 slots but only about 9 people available to help. I would, but it’s on March 10th which is my anniversary (aka The Day When She Who Must Be Obeyed Assumed Permanent Control).

Sexist jerks. Like the Appleseed Project and most clubs, CFR&PC doesn't offer free NRA classes to men - they expect men without prior military experience to pay for a NRA class and be grateful it was offered at all.

Kids, though? Sure, everybody likes teaching kids and have free get-them-interested classes. Women? Sure, let's teach them for free.

Teach a boy? Sure. But if that boy reaches manhood without a father in his life, or with role models who were convicted felons and chose to subsequently obey the law and not have guns - PGCs tell them to Drop Dead.

Although I don't have a single expensive license or certification I will always be willing to teach anyone who wants to learn how to shoot.

For the cost of ammo at most.

@dustydog - I disagree.

I am male, a CFR&PC member, and CFR&PC paid for my NRA certification class to become an NRA-Certified Range Safety Officer because that benefited the club. The only commitment was to enroll in the club's RSO program, with no requirement to stay enrolled.

As for other NRA classes, since teaching classes aren't a club function, but the club does make its facilities available to NRA-Certified Instructors to teach those classes for a small fee, the club, quite reasonably to my mind, expects the prospective instructor to pay his or her own way through those classes to obtain certifications. I've gotten several NRA Instructor certifications at CFR&PC at my own expense because that's where the courses were offered, as coordinated by the Chief Instructor. And, I've taught numerous NRA classes at CFR&PC over the last several years.

As for teaching women - eg., our annual Ladies' Day at the Gun Range - that is an outreach function that we, as members, instructors and shooters, believe is reasonable to engage in. Many of us who enjoy shooting, who know how to shoot, who know how to teach shooting, believe we have what might be termed an evangelical mission to introduce shooting to those who have not had the opportunity to experience it.

A woman who has had the opportunity to fire an AR-15 or a Garand on our high power range is someone who will not accept at face value anti-gunners' claim that "assault rifles are bad." A woman who has had the opportunity to watch or shoot a very simple and basic match stage in IPSC, Cowboy, IDPA or 3-Gun won't consider a 1911, a lever action rifle or a shotgun anything but interesting, fun, and a potential self defense tool.

And, speaking of self defense, we have the Basic Handgun section. Two instructors - I'm one of them - have run Basic Handguns for the past 4 years (CFR&PC has been doing Ladies' Day for 8 years) and every year it's the busiest section. Last year we had over 400 women show up, and most of them went through Basic Handguns because that's the tool women understand to be the best portable tool to defend their own lives and the lives of their families from criminal attack. Over 90% of the women who went through Basic Handgun had never fired a handgun before. Reaching them with the message that guns are not something to be feared, that it is possible to competently and safely own and manage a firearm is of tremendous value to all of us.

I think this is important enough that, having retired and moved from central Florida, I'm driving 500 miles each way that weekend to help run the Handgun Section on Ladies' Day weekend.

Should CFR&PC do the same for men with dedicated men's events? Absolutely. Several of us have suggested that. We have also suggested that Ladies' Day be broken up, rather than one annual club-wide event, be done quarterly in a more limited fashion. For example, a quarterly event that's limited to a defined number of participants, regardless of gender, would - in MY estimation - be a better option. My learned opinion not withstanding, that decision is up to the Executive Board of the club. I cannot control that.

I'd suggest that, since you appear to be dissatisfied with the directions and action of the club, and might be a member, you should approach the Executive Board and suggest a change. There is an established procedure for that in the club's bylaws.
