So, because we’re experiencing a rather brutal winter here in Florida, I decided to wear slightly longer shorts yesterday and go shoot a round of sporting clays with a buddy of mine. We went to Fish Hawk Sporting Clays which was a pleasant surprise that it’s not so far away from me. Nice clay range too with sporting clays, 5 stand, and trap available.
Because I have the awesome Epic HD cam I got from OpticsPlanet.net I figured I’d take it along for some awesome POV footage of me tackling the scourge of clay pigeons. Sadly, that did not work out exactly as planned as you can see below
You see, when I shoot pistols, I put the camera on the left side of my ear pro and angle it so that when I cock my head to the left to deal with my left-eye dominance, everything lines up correctly. Here, I totally forgot that when shooting rifles & shotguns, I have to use my right eye. So the camera gets WAY cockeyed.
You can’t really make out all the clays either here. I hit all 4 in this video (nicked the last one) but you really can’t make that out. Part of the problem is the angle, the other is the super-wide angle of the video which makes the clays appear very small and thus the even smaller bits that get taken off when I hit them don’t show up very well. For fun, the next time I go I will mount the camera onto the end of the shottie itself. Should be nausea inducing footage!
Had a good time. The front 8 were ‘easier’ and I did really, really well. Only missed a few and was feeling rather cocky about my skills. Right up until we started on the back 8.
I think out of the 5 stands we shot, I hit 2 clays total.
Still, I rather enjoy the sport and wouldn’t mind doing it a lot more. However, I really need to find a cheaper source for ammo first. That got a bit pricey for something I’d like to do on a regular basis. Reloading isn’t too bad of an option for shotguns. The presses are cheap enough as are the components.
Did I mention it was 80°+ yesterday? Brutal winter, I tell you.
