New PC at work

12 cores (24 if hyperthreading is turned on). 24 Gigs of memory. 512Gb of SSD for the main drive and a Terabyte thrown in for good measure.

This is a DESKTOP, not a server!

Looking at that CPU graph, it's doing the digital equivalent of slumping in the chair and twiddling its thumbs. Every now and then it wakes up to utter "Bored..." in a desultory fashion.

If you want to wake up all the cores and get it warmed up point your browser at the new NRA website. That'll eat up a few cycles.

It's nice to have that kind of thing at work. I could certainly use several of those cores for VMs.

Now, for home use, I just put in an order to replace my 5-year old desktop with a six-core i7 processor with 32gb RAM (expanding to 64 GB when prices come down) 250 GB SSD and a Intel hardware raid controller with four 3TB drives, an nvidia 590/3GB card with provisions for a second one later. I'm not sure what I'll do with all that now, but I'm sure someone will come up with something over the next five years.

Oh, the wet dreams I'm having ...

I retired ten years ago. The final product I designed involved lots of subtle arithmetic, including nonlinear optimizations performed in real time by floating point digital signal processors.

It is not possible to generate a closed form sensitivity analysis of such a system, so I spent months running Monte Carlo simulations to find what it was senstive to. My simulations all ran under MATLAB (good stuff!) and were relatively easy to write, but the desktop I had at the time was (if I recall correctly) a 120 MHz Pentium II with 128 MBytes of RAM and a 300 MByte hard drive.

Every simulation run required about eight minutes. Think how fast it would run on Robb's new machine.

The only saving grace is that it doesn't matter. I don't have to do it anymore.

But I can imagine ...

Hopefully when we do our specs for our machine upgrades later this year something like that will be the plan. Although mgmt is trying to force us to a single machine per dev which means a laptop.

I don't want no stinking 40lb laptop.
