.22 is ok for raccoon if your shot placement is good. His wasn't. His real mistake was using a single-shot rifle. Bet he doesn't make that mistake again.

After finding a pair of raccoons in my trash, and trying to discourage them with a broom (I'm inside city limits), I've given up on that bit of stupidity in the future.

a buddy of mine used to hunt them for their pelts up in Maine. The preferred method was to tree them with dogs and shoot them out of the tree. Only .22 was legal, and he said it often took several to get the job done.

there aren't many creatures on earth where that doesn't hold true. Just on some critters your margin for error is large, while others it is VERY small.

Having pissed off a racoon a couple of times when I was a kid (I had a BB gun... also not good for racoon... just sayin) I can confirm that if you piss of the little bastards, sometimes they turn around and go on the attack. I was lucky, I had a good dog. I'm not sure I would have lived much past 12 without that dog.

That is the situation I always figured my Savage 22/410 was made for.

If the .22 fails to stop I hit 'em up close with the shotgun to break the charge.

I use 22LR subsonics on the raccoons I kill but do date they have always been in a trap. And I use a Stevens Favorite replica from Savage made tactical with a Harbor Freight LED flashlight taped to the receiver.

I did laugh until I had tears running down my cheeks reading this tale.
