Yes, I would love to play Skyrim
Geekdom
No, I’m not forking over $60 to do so.
That’s like 5 rounds of 10mm.

LOL. Or .303 Brit.
Oblivion was #2 Son's favorite game ever, and so he's been waiting with unquenchable anticipation for months. All he wanted with Skyrim was a six pack of Mosnter and to be left alone for 36 hours ...

Wow, that's almost 300 rounds of 7.62x54r.

I'm kinda picky about my computer game purchases. I like lots of story, plenty of strategy opportunities, and mod-ability.
So, when I add up what I've spent on Fallout: New Vegas and its expansions, for example, and divide by hours played (thank you, Steam client), I come out to $.26 per hour of entertainment, not counting electrical costs at about 600W per hour.
A range visit with my M-14 comes out to about $23 per hour of nice steady aimed long range shots, just ammo costs
A range visit with my P14-45 comes out to about $28 per hour, just ammo costs.
A DVD/Blu-ray can give you $10/hour, divided by how many times you like to rewatch it.
To be sure, there are dud computer game purchases, but overall, that's the best value for money you can get for your entertainment dollar.

Playing Skyrim now. Unlike most games, this one is worth $60.

Steam Gifts
Kinda doubt that will help you, PC specific, and your account has to have $50+ worth of games already owned as a spam check.

I feel the same way about Modern Warfare 3. I want it, but $60 is like 3 mags of the 7.62x39 that my AR will actually shoot.

The Skyrim Collectors Edition is a steal at $150.
I mentioned the price to my nephew and he blinked and said, "What, do they include an actual dragon in the box"?

wfgodbold - I LOL'd since I knew what you meant without clicking!
Might pick it up. I don't game much, but I remember how much time Morrowind and Oblivion sucked up.

Games, if you play the heck out of them, are pretty economical entertainment. Far more than going to the movies, anyway.
I wait for deals on amazon, or sales, or used copies most of the time. There are a few games I do buy immediately on release, and they're games I know I'll play enough to get the cost per hour down to a dollar or lower.
Skyrim's open world makes that a low bar to hurdle.
Just think of Skyrim as practice for post apocalyptic survival after the ammo runs out and everyone starts mutating. It's not gaming; it's research!

The biggest selling point for me was that I can still play Oblivion several years after I bought it and still find/do new things, and still be entertained - and Skyrim seems to have taken that same approach.
The dragon thing is just icing on the cake.

Robb,
It is worth every penny. I bought it on the 14th and have done little else since then but play. I'm actually ashamed at the number of hours I've spent in this game.

30 Dark Elf Assassin (who's finished the main quest)
31 Nord Two-Handed Warhammer (holy crap the damage), heavy armor
19 Redguard Sword & Board, heavy armor.
Priceless

Fun, isn't it (says the level 26 dark elf, light armour, archer, destruction mage)? ;)
I actually got 4 dragon souls in one session the other day - 3 in one battle. I fast traveled to a spot near some ruins I wanted to clear out, and arrived in the middle of a dragon battle. I showed up just as one dragon died and got the soul before I even realized what was going on, then I took out the other two one at a time. I fast-traveled to the college to store some of my loot (dragon bones and scales are
heavy
) and before I got to door for the Hall of Attainment another dragon
attacked
the college.
That turned out badly - for the dragon. It's amusing how half a dozen mages can make such short work of a dragon. I didn't have time to do anything more than fire off a few arrows and one fire shout.
One hint: blacksmithing is good for leveling up quickly (iron daggers seem to have the best cost/benefit ratio for this), and also lets you get good quality armour and weapons cheaply by making it yourself. Also, a draugr deathlord will fill a grand soul gem.
Enchanted glass armour is good stuff!
