This little freakshow showed up in chat this morning because he couldn’t tell the difference between Slashdot and SlashNET. When he realized we were gunnies, he started on the litany of falsehoods and distortions that our public has been brainwashed into thinking. Like most ardent gun banners, when presented with factual evidence, he decided that he didn’t want anything to do with it.

If someone breaks into your house, call the cops

We asked “What happens during the 15 to 20 minutes you have to wait for the police to show up” his response is that you can always crawl out a window. To him, there was nothing worth using lethal force for, yet he would not respond to why it was ok to ask someone else to use lethal force in your name. When you call the cop, you’re invoking his or her gun at the same time.

Just use a knife / pepper spray / taser

Taser – one shot. What happens if you miss / have multiple assailants? Knife – requires contact at intimate distances, not easily wielded by the elderly, infirm, or weak. Pepper spray isn’t always effective and inside a house? You’re getting a full dose of it as well.

Guns give you a false sense of security. Instead you should get a security system!

Really? Let’s play a quick game. Let’s say 4 guys break into my house. I threaten to turn on my security alarm or I rack some buckshot into the shotgun. Which one provides REAL security?

The sad thing is this was just some random punk off the digital street. This kind of crap-thinking is what passes for 'enlightened’ these days. Refuse to defend yourself or your loved ones, pretend flashing lights and sirens equal real security, and claim the moral high ground that you do not use violence yet have no issue allowing the state to do it as your proxy.

As to the last point, I am all in favour of security systems and "hardening" a home. The best kind of burglar out there is the one who choses to rob your neighbor's house instead of yours.

But.

Security systems and door locks and nasty spiky plants outside of windows do SWEET BUGGER ALL to stop someone who's already inside your house.

Think about it - if a criminal will not break into your house because he or she thinks you have a security system, a window sticker saying "Protected By A Security System" is just as effective and a lot cheaper.

Two - nothing wrong with an alarm system, but don't believe it will scare away intruders. Instead use it as an early warning device so you can get to your firearm quicker.

Three - Monitoring doesn't mean dick-all when there's someone in your house. It's faster to call 911 yourself than wait for the monitoring agency to call you, not get an answer, then make a call to 911 (which, from what I've been told by people who work in the industry, tend to get dropped to the bottom of the cops' importance list).

I look at house alarms as only early warning systems when you're home and maybe as a *slight* deterrent when you're not. Nothing wrong with using them as part of a security system, but in and of themselves, they provide very little security.

Security is like onions. Layers man, LAYERS.

So, harden your house. Steel doors, window locks, that stupid cut-off broom stick for the sliding glass door (which is a dreadful security risk in it's own right, but they are nice, so many people have them regarless).

THEN, Alarm. Which as Robb just pointed out is more of an early warning system "Like wake up dude, the goblins are attacking!"

Put calling 911 in there somewhere, mostly because it looks weird if someone is breaking in and you don't call 911, but don't rely on it because cops always show up late to the show anyway.

Finally, have a domicile defense plan that includes a firearm (or multiple firearms).

As an aside, please include in your defense plan what walls you may (probably will, residential walls are crap at stopping bullets) shoot right through if you do have to shoot and miss (or over-penetrate when perforating the badguy). Make sure your plan includes defensive positions to mitigate the possibility of a stray bullet penetrating a wall and hitting a family memeber on the other side.

THIS is what is important.

I believe that those who are unwilling to arm themselves in defense of themselves and/or their family are MORALLY WRONG*. The sin of weakness in the face of evil is in itself evil.

* Note, I don't think the government should legislate that you follow my moral code any more than it should legislate that I follow yours. But that doesn't stop me from pointing my finger and calling you weak and immoral if you don't step up and protect you and yours.

Used to have this happen in a lot of chatrooms I used to frequent that had a handful of gunnies/ freedom/minded people and a bunch Euro-teens.

I may have opened a few minds...I certainly got a bunch of them to believe whatever they believe to themselves.

Being Anti-gun is a religion. The Non-Cultists look up information and switch sides. The Cultists aren't going to listen to the heathens, and somehow think they might convert a few of them *snicker*.

Security is just the inverse of convenience. The best way to increase the security of anything, be it a location or a computer file/account, is to do everything you can to make it harder or more time consuming to access. This is why locks exist; they aren't impenetrable, but they take extra time and either skill or strength to bypass. Steel doors are higher security than normal doors because their strength makes them more difficult to go through. If something is difficult or time consuming, the majority of normal lazy criminals would rather move on to a quicker, easier score and at the very least the more time they have to spend to get in the more time there is for something to go bad for them; a neighbor sees, a cop drives by, you come home, etc.

(As an aside, steel doors are wonderful, but it makes your door frame/deadbolt the weakest part of your entry system. To fix it, go to Lowe's or Home Depot and pick up a piece of steel flat stock long enough to go from near the floor to up above the spot where the bolt slides into the jam in the 1/8-1/4 inch thickness range and the same width as your door jam on the bolt side. You can drill screw holes in it and affix it with screws as long as possible without going all the way through the jam. Now, if someone wants to take your door off they have to put a serious amount of force on it, enough to break the bolt off, because you aren't going to just drive it through the jam anymore.)

One thing to remember when assessing the security of anything is that your security is only as good as your weakest failure point. If your doors are built like Fort Knox vault doors, but you have unprotected first floor glass windows big enough for a person to fit through, you aren't truly secure.

Also, these are the people who rail on about training. If pistol shooting is a perishable skill, hand to hand combat (eg knife fighting) has a lifespan in line with that of a mayfly.
