While I was in AFROTC, one of the things the upperclassmen would do during inspection to see if you could maintain military bearing was ask you to tell a joke of a militarily appropriate nature. Nothing making fun of racial, gender, national origin or political stereotypes would be appropriate in an apolitical professional military organization. Since other members of the unit were expected to be listening to the questions of other cadets in order to maintain consistency of answers when pressed, it became a test of other cadets as well.

IG: Cadet Sullivan, do you know a joke?
Sullivan: YES, SIR!
IG: Tell the joke, Mr. Sullivan.
Sullivan: SIR, TWO MARINES WALK INTO A BAR, SIR! YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THE SECOND ONE WOULD HAVE SEEN IT, SIR!
IG: Well done, Mr Sullivan.

You have to tell that joke at an extra drill first so no one is surprised, and therefore, no one will laugh during a real inspection. You can throw out some Steven Wright stuff in an inspection format, but for the love of God, give your unit-mates some warning before you pull that stuff.

Furthermore, it is essential to military discipline and unit cohesion that that joke is the only one told by anyone in the formation. We Have Standardized On A Joke, you see, in accordance with military discipline and organizational best practices. Comedic improvisation would be a special operations function.

Tirno, when I was stationed at Pendleton, every morning the Sergeant running the roll call & formation would always end with "Are there any questions?" after wards everyone would turn to me and I'd have to come up with something like "Why is abbreviation such a long word?" or "Who thought it would be funny to put an S in lisp?"

Woe to me if I didn't have something geared up.

At least you were the practical joker in your unit that didn't get "Snake Charmer" duty. When your punishment for playing pranks with Rattle Snakes is to go catch more Rattle Snakes you start to wonder about your commanders...
And no that was not me, but I do know him personally "Snake Charmer" is just not right.

I first saw this on Jerry Pournelle's site when he w explaining the discovey. I broke down laughing and told it to some people in my office. A lot of them didn't get it.
