Competitive shooting

Well, my mag pouches from Blade-Tech arrived yesterday, so that means I am 100% geared up for my USPSA shoot this Sunday.

I’ll be shooting a Smith & Wesson M&P 40 in Limited. Sure, I could shoot Limited 10 and probably not have my ass handed to me, but I’m not really shooting against others right now and I switched from single stack because I got tired of reloading. 15 rounds of ~~40mm armor piercing military style ammo~~ (sorry, had a bout of MSM there) .40 caliber is better than 8 when I’m trying to focus on hitting the target more than trying to also focus on ensuring I’m not going to run dry when ~~missing~~ shooting a particular target.

I have 4 mag pouches, but the Revolution ones are a bit large (cheapest ones I could buy) and the 4th one sits a bit too far back to really be useful, so I’ll just carry three and keep the other as a spare. One would hope going into any string with 61 rounds will be enough. If not, I don’t really need to be shooting.

The Revolution holster, however, is fantastic. Damned thing is fast on the draw. I don’t think that presentation is going to be something slowing my time down too much this weekend.

My focus, however, is going to be on accurate shooting. I’ll be slow, I know this, and I need to focus on making sure I’m getting A hits versus very fast D’s. The speed will come with time. I’ll still be ‘learning’ the M&P 40 as I’ve not shot thousands of rounds through it yet, something I should have done, but I go to competition with the experience I have, not the experience I’d prefer.

Based on my disasters from last weekend, I say bring sunscreen and a spare pistol. You never know when the sun is actually going to pop out nor when your freaking slide stop is going to break in half.

Then again, the amount of gear you have to buy to have another pistol is almost the same price as buying a backup, so there's that...

I shoot an M&P 40 (it production) and if you want cheap mag pouches that work try the Uncle Mike's kydex ones. I've used the same 2 double pouches for nearly 10 years with a variety of double stack magazines for different guns, and they work like a champ. They are also about $20 for each double pouch.

Going single stack will make you more conscious of your front site, not less. When you have fewer rounds to miss with, it focuses the mind pretty well. Site picture, trigger press, follow through, lather, rinse, repeat. It also has the added benefit of requiring every reload to be perfect. I shot single stack exclusively my first three years, mostly because it was the only gun I owned, but the experience benefited me a lot when I started the transition to limited. I still shoot 30-40% of my matches using my single stack.

You'll be fine with 15rd mags. In practice you may find an average of one instance per match where it would be advantageous to have 20-21rds over 15. Most of the time you can find a spot to reload where you're otherwise not shooting that won't really slow you down. I shot 16rd mags for 2 years.

I dont recall who said it/where i read it, but a slow hits is faster then a fast miss every time.
