There’s no need to bring a gun to where you work

Especially when you can look outside your window and see that the entire building is surrounded by cops, K9 units, and helicopters looking for a criminal with a gun.

Nah, it’s better I’m disarmed, sitting here at work because crazy guy could never walk into the building.

BTW I had a co-worker have a pretty serious psychotic episode which scared everybody pretty good.

Is there any consensus on how to approach this when carry is prohibited in a workplace?

Our employee rules explicitly state weapons are not allowed, even by permit holders.

If there was ever a scenario where law and order were severely compromised, yet I still was coming into the office (I'd probably work from home if rioting broke out), I would likely break the rules.

In "normal" times though, the risk/reward is difficult to sort through. Whatever the probability of needing your CCW, there's probably a bigger chance of getting caught with it (printing, etc.)

Bingo. It's a risk / reward balance which is pathetic we even have to make. At my last job, I could carry. My bosses knew I carried and still fired me. Because they knew I was no threat to them.

Mr (or Mrs as the rumor mill has it) Crazy outside our building? Probably no such compunctions against harming others.

Where I work is just off of the infamous Orange Blossom Trail here in Orlando and I have been gradually, quietly, lobbying the owner of the company I work for to lighten up on the "no guns at work" policy because of it. So far no dice, but I'm still working on it. We are north of the really bad parts of OBT, so it isn't too bad here, but I still worry a little when I work late and have to walk to my car across the dark parking lot.

@Les if it was a binary choice of course you would carry.But the more likely outcome is someone finds out and tells HR and you are out of a job in a shitty job market.Now maybe your skill set and education are in demand enough for you to take that risk but I bet that doesn't apply to most people.

Interestingly, my skills are in high demand. However, it's a small market here and although my skill is in demand, that doesn't mean I will personally be.

Besides, guns are a tool and not the only weapon I have in my self defense arsenal. The biggest weapon at my disposal is that gooey blob between my ears.

As my only 'job' is a member of the county Grand Jury, it is jail time to carry into 'the building'.

Back when a certain Redmond Company was stock splitting every 6 months, there were more seecamp firearms in Washington state then copies of their HR manual. I've never had a seecamp, but I'm also the only geek in the state to never work in Redmond... Very happy to work at home where longer site radius is allowed.
