I know a ton of gunnies have severe cases of  turgidity when it comes to the concept of “carry everywhere”. Lord knows I would never consider carrying inside a post office or whatnot because that would be illegal! Heaven forbid, I should just accept the fact that criminals too abide by the No Guns policy in those types of places! But this isn’t about that. It’s about those rare times when it actually makes more sense to leave your heater at home (securely encased, with ammo stored in a safety deposit box in Wyoming. Unless you live in Wyoming, then you have to use a bank in Denver).

I work out now on a regular basis at the local Y. It’s barely 3 miles from my house. When I go there, I’m in workout shorts and one of those shirts that wick sweat away, neither of which is conducive to concealing a pistol, especially considering I’m going to be wiggling around like a parishioner at a snake handling bible study. Even my Comp-Tac Minotaur doesn’t hold on that well.

Being that I would not be carrying into the gym, I had to consider – Did it make sense to leave it in my car? Let’s look at the possible scenarios

  1. I drive to the Y, exercise, drive home. Nothing happens
  2. I drive to the Y, someone decides to go on a killing spree because the treadmill’s TV is broke, my gun is in my car
  3. I drive to the Y, pump some iron, and get carjacked on the way home
  4. I drive to the Y, someone breaks into my car while I’m sweating to the oldies

Now the one that will happen 99.99999999% of the time is #1. #2 isn’t that likely, but even if it was, not having immediate access to my firearm makes having in the car practically useless. #3 is slightly higher than #2, but that’s like saying Al Sharpton is slightly more honest than Jesse Jackson. Even if someone attempted to carjack me while I’m on the road, in my car, I have the ability to drive off, making even this scenario less likely to end up in personal harm.

But #4 isn’t out of the question. People break into cars all the time when they know their owners are away shopping, watching a movie, getting their nails done, or working out. In fact, any criminal with an extra brain cell to rub against his other one could comprehend that people working out are probably going to be leaving their valuables in their car while they’re trying to burn off the double Whopper with cheese they had for lunch.

Looking at these scenarios and outcomes, this is one of those times when it makes sense to leave my gun at home. Besides, it’s just a (very effective, mind you) tool. I never leave my true weapon behind which sits between my ears. Add in an extra helping of situational awareness and I’m pretty sure I can avoid most situations where a gun is the only thing that could save me.

I’d like to hear your opinion on my logic and if you think there are flaws in it. Echo chambers are not allowed here.
