He has his finger on the pulse of many of the ills we face in society. Such as this
Last week, iMac started taekwondo. In her first class, all three kids got “Great Kid!” awards which made me think “damn, another ‘everyone is the same’ kind of class”. I was wrong, thankfully, and Irelyn was the only student to get an award the next week (she listens very well) and the instructors seem to be pretty no-nonsense which I like. However, it reminded me of all the things my girls do where everyone gets something, just for trying.
Look, there’s no benefit in making your children cynical at too early of an age, but at some point they have to learn that they’re not always going to win, that sometimes they’re going to try their hardest and come in last place, and that no, they don’t get a trophy just for showing up. It scares the crap out of me that it seems that too many children are not allowed to fail. How you handle failure is a very big part of what kind of person you are. If you’re not allowed to explore that part of you, when you become a nominal adult, you’re going to be in for a world of hurt when you learn you aren’t really the precious snowflake mommy & daddy said you were.
