Took the family to Sea World yesterday. It was iMac’s first time so I took the day off. Got rained on something fierce, but they had a good time nonetheless.
However, when we first entered park, the ‘security’ drones had to inspect our bags. We carry a backpack with necessities like a few granola bars, a towel, etc so we unzipped the main compartment and the old fart put a dowel in there for 1/1000th of a second then waved us on. Until he noticed the clip of my 5.11 knife. That was a no-go!
So, security at Sea World is, like Disney and other theme parks, based on what can be seen and ignores anything that can be tucked away. I completely forgot I had the thing, it’s just a habit now to clip it to my pocket where I can get to is as needed. Had I thought about it and just put it in my pocket, I’d have been able to walk in, unmolested.
Now, I understand why these places do this – it’s because most people can be fooled into thinking they’re being taken care of, safety wise. When some idiot finally has enough of Shamu sending him psychic messages and snaps, killing everyone in the ‘splash zone’ with his KaBar discretely hidden in his boxers… well, nothing will happen. Real security is expensive because it requires massive investment in both personnel and equipment and the added measures will put off enough people to affect sales. That, and crazy people doing crazy things is rare enough where that isn’t going to happen enough to scare people off because of it.
Yes, I did put it back in my car because if I wasn’t going to carry it clipped to my pocket, it could fall out during a ride. So, they had that going for them I guess.
