Thanks for the help though, seriously. I picked up a pair of Sennheiser’s at the Big Blue & Yellow Store of Easy Returns last night. Plugged into my Android, they suck in a way that I’ve not experienced in ages. Plugged into the computer though, and they’re not bad. I don’t know if they’re $80 good though. I’m wearing them today to see if they stay comfortable.

Interestingly, some of the Bose headphones they had on display were awesome, but too damned expensive. Bose tends to be like that.

These are over the ear type so they have a passive quieting factor to them (the noise reduction Bose felt like someone shoved a vacuum on my ears, but it was quiet!) plus they have that visual “Leave me alone” factor to them.

Maybe I should start blogging naked women wearing headphones and get millions of hits a day.

Where are you going to be using these primarily? I gave up on trying to find the jack-of-all-trades headphones long ago, and just got a proper pair of big ones for my desk at work.

If the topic was actual guns, i.e. the mechanical aspects, then things could be different.

For the record, I think Bose is over priced, over hyped and marketed to aging baby boomers who've since forgot what it was like to listen to loud rock music.

I have a 16 year old pair of Sony MDR-7509 at my desk. The jack might soon need replacing, but these still rival low end studio head phones. I guess they should considering I dropped $110 back in high school for them. :(

I'm going to go with sean on the bose issue. They haven't made much worth purchasing from the wave radio/acoustimass era on. (Some of their older speakers and PA stuff were ok)

And as for beats...well...they're made by monster, so while they work, you're going to pay 4-5x what you should for the level of performance you get.

I've got a pair of AKG 240s that I use at my desk at work. They may be a bit bigger than you're looking for, but I find them comfortable to wear for the majority of the day. Been well worth the money so far, and 5 years ago I'd never spent more than $30 on headphones.
I'm running them through a headphone amp I got as a gift a few years back but I imagine they'd drive just as well from a sound card.
"Good" headphones are always going to have trouble being driven by a cell phone IMO, but you can buy/build a small booster to mitigate this if you're doing a lot of listening from your phone.

One thing I like about the AKG's, and the grados I had before them, is that they're open backed. This pretty much means they don't block noise at all, which makes them useless on a plane/train/etc, but I like it for the (relatively quiet) office since unlike the earbud crowd, I can actually hear people coming up behind me and trying to talk to me.

Whichever pair you go with, I'd recommend digging up a frequency response graph for them online somewhere, and making an eq setting on your computer/phone (if possible) to flatten out their inherent peaks/dips. I found this to sound a lot better and cut down on harshness.

I've got a set of Shure SRH440s that come in right at $100. They're comfortable for all-day use (they're entry-level studio cans), have shockingly deep bass response, and have great overall quality. I use them for mixing/mastering vocals, and they're worth every dime. The music-engineering cans are more 'spensive, but for general-use and music listening? Can't be beat.

(sweetwater.com is good for the $100 price)

The Sennheisers are up there somewhere. Haven't seen them in months. Along with several other pairs of audiophool cans. The two sets that give acceptable sound are made for people with small ears and no glasses.

I use a twelve yo set of Sony's for music, and whatever. Second best for pulling very weak voices out of white noise has been a pair of $40 Koss cans. But for all day music or more serious uses I reach for the Sony's.

Before I went out and bought a high-end set of phones, I'd go down to my local audiologist and have the hearing tested. I know that I have a 20Db drop between 3k and 6k plus the high end ain't what it used to be. Too many years of trigger pulling before ear protection was a concern.

Ok so here is your tie in for guns and headphones. I got these at Christmas and love them. Best don't even know what to call them head / ear phones with a microphone I have tried. The sound is very good, they are a little heavier but fit my ears perfect.

Plus how cool is it to have 9 mm shells shoved in your ears all the time. Reminds me of the gunny sgt on discovery.
