That’s Hawaiian for “Unpossible!”
PEARL CITY, Hawaii -- A loaded handgun brought to a Hawaii middle school by a student was fired on campus before school started on Monday, narrowly missing one student and leaving another with minor injuries, police said.
Couldn’t have happened. Schools are Gun Free Zones. There’s a magical force field around schools that prevent law abiding citizens from bringing in firearms. It would seem that somehow, that force field doesn’t work on those who disregard the law.
The 14-year-old who brought the gun to Highlands Intermediate School in Pearl City was taken into police custody. He faces possible arrest on charges ranging from attempted murder to assault to reckless endangerment, police said.
Attempted murder? Give me a break. Unless he was directly aiming at someone when he pulled the trigger and his intent was to kill them, then that’s a bogus charge. Reckless endangerment I can deal with, but again you’re dealing with a 14 year old boy. We used to call Reckless Endangerment “recess” back in my day.
But this is where we are as a society when we disregard intent and stick with Zero Intelligence policies. That boy should be punished severely for his actions. At 14, you know better than to bring a gun into class so there’s no excuse. But to possibly put him away for a good portion of his life simply because you’re too lazy to discern his true intent and just wanted to slap on “Attempted Murder” so you look like your tough on crime is a crime in and of itself.
Of course, parents are clamoring for metal detectors, body cavity searches, and all the entrapments one would associate with the TSA to ‘make the school safer’. I’d start off with an Eddie Eagle program so that kids know better than to play with guns, but instead we allow our children’s minds to be educated by CSI:Honolulu and Die Hard XIV – Escape from Assisted Living.
Just another example of the failures of gun control. The gun banners claim that by requiring that I disarm that these types of things won’t happen. Seems like every other week, there’s another story about someone breaking through the gun-free barrier and yet I’m still no more a threat to those kids than a fly. And with this instance, look for the banners to again demand that I be punished and forced to undergo stronger scrutiny in a vain attempt to prevent someone else from doing something wrong.
W’aalu donga m’akula kula – Hawaiian for “It’s not a gun free zone if there are guns in it”.
