Kevin reviews the Leupold 1.5x-4x Scope.

For my AR, I want a decent red dot. I’m not really interested in “Beyond 100 yard” distances and while I can generally hit with irons, I like the fast acquisition of a red dot. However, good glass is worth it in everything I’ve ever seen. I’ve got some shitty glass that makes you WANT to use the irons.

Granted, the only reason I’m not into >100yd shots is because I don’t hunt. I probably should remedy that.

I like the idea of getting into 100+ yard shots, just for the challenge. But first I need to get a decent scope. The Simmons 3x-9x that came with my rifle just isn't up to the job - heck, it's barely up to the job of a 100 yard shot.

There's a good chance I'll end up with a Red Dot on some kind of quick-detach mount that has a reasonable chance of holding a zero: My local 3 Gun match is now designates "Tac Iron" as Tac Limited, and 1x Red Dots are ok, which kinda sucks for iron sight shooters.

A rule of thumb that I follow is, "The bitterness of poor quality lasts longer than the pleasure of a low price." In my experience, that REALLY applies to scopes.

What I have recently been surprised by is how the quality of an older high-quality scope has been eclipsed by a newer high-quality scope. I replaced a 25-year-old Leupold Vari-X II in 2x7 with a Leupold VX-3 in 2.5x8. The brightness of the image of the new scope, particularly in low light dawn/dusk conditions, is astounding.

Bottom line: Take your time. Do your homework. Try before you buy. There are LOTS of quality scopes out there, and it's worth your time, effort, and money to pick the right one.

I've got two AR's, one with a Douglas heavy target barrel and a very nice Leupold Mk IV LR/T scope, and one Stag M4gery with an EOTech and backup irons. The irons co-witness with the EOTech.

I can hit a 9"x11" plate at 500 meters from the bench with the target AR all day long. I can hit a full-sized silhouette of a pig at 300 meters with the M4gery, offhand, seven or eight times out of ten.

And I don't hunt either. Though Texas feral hog looks mighty appealing...

... but only when a crosshair is superimposed thereon. Otherwise, they're ugly enough to make a camel look good.
