Almost bricked my Android today. Accidentally closed out of the app that was updating the phone (it wasn’t working as it was, from what I can tell) while trying to get FroYo, and it wouldn’t start back up. Luckily, I was able to recover the damned thing and now have Android 2.2 on my Captivate.

Lost everything though. No big deal, I’ll reinput all my data when I get home.

The proximity of root to brick is why I don't root my phone. I don't know that I can control the process, and it could go in ways I never intended (i.e., bricking it).

I've soft-bricked my Vibrant a couple dozen times and hard-bricked it twice.

And I still lose finger nails trying to recover it. But my understanding is that there seems to be a lot more tools and community support on the T-Maybe/Vibrant side of the Galaxy.

FROYO at this point hasn't exactly made the sweat worth it. So far,it's pretty buggy for no gain that I can see.

Are you running the canned Samsung/carrier-spec Froyo update or a custom ROM?

I know the T-Mobile release was exceptionally foul. I have it on my dev phone and it's so bad I usually just use my daily driver for debugging.

Out of curiosity do you back up to your google account. I bricked my motorola droid and when I got it recovered it resynched everything including apps.

From one geek to another, you might have better luck with one of the ROMs from XDA (just try to ignore the meatheads in the forums...they're pretty thick sometimes). There are several very good ROMs that are maintained and updated quite frequently over there.

I prolly don't have to say it, but for other readers: Do your homework...read, read, read. As I'm on a Vibrant I don't have personal experience with the Captivate ROMs and so won't/can't recommend one at this time.

I once had a router decide that the middle of a firmware update was the best time to disconnect itself from my computer thereby committing seppuku. I was not amused.
