The Stupidity, it BURNS

As well as hassle the same elderly lady 50 times.

Let that sink in for a moment. This lady has had 50 raids on her house because the Popo uses a private address as the default address for warrants.

I’m a computer developer, and the concept that you MUST put in an address is stupid enough as it is, but for pete’s sake, it should be the Police Dept. Headquarters if it has to be anything.

You would think that eventually at least one person out of the entire SWAT team would recognize the address and speak up before it gets raided.

"Hey, guys? We've been to this address like, 3 times just this week, and it's always wrong. Maybe we should verify it first, this time."

Oh, wait. That would require intelligent thought in a government job. What was I thinking?

Doesn't surprise me. I moved into an apartment in college and was visited by parole officers and city police numerous times for several weeks. They were looking for the previous resident. I finally started keeping my ID right by the door. Turned out he had moved to another apartment in the same building.

I would think that the victums would be able to sue. This is a case of simple harrassment and since it has been going on so long, the entire police force should already know about it. Therefore, color of law should not apply.

But what do I know?

If the police are repeatedly swearing affidavits to a judge regarding warrants that have the wrong address, what else on the warrant is a lie?

My understanding is that a search warrant has to describe the particulars of: place, persons, items expected to be found there, the basis for the allegation of criminality, and the reason for the search.

If the police HABITUALLY get the address wrong on warrants, AND DON'T NOTICE, what else do they get wrong?

Even worse, why is the judge signing off on these warrants - doesn't he/she even READ it?

Way back in my college days at a small Southern Baptist University in SC, I had a dorm room telephone number whose last 4 digits were the same as the first three for a girls dorm, plus the digit for the second floor.

Every few Saturdays and Sundays a visiting parent would try to phone their darling daughter by dialing the whole 7 digits from the girl's dorm lobby phone, and get me or my roomie across campus in our all-male dorm room.

The conversation went something like, "Is Suzie there? This is her Mom/Dad and we're downstairs."

We'd answer in our best hungover male voices, "Suzie? Wait a second, we'll look and see if she's still here." And then we'd leave the phone off the hook.

But 50 repeat raids? Jumping jiminy, what a crock!

I get your drift, but isn't the sad fact that your comment is funny (in an "Oh shit, not again!" kind of way) a terrifying indictment of how bad things have become?

We are so inured to poor job performance by just about EVERYONE that we almost expect to see stuff like this.
