Man being charged for practicing engineering without a license
After an engineering consultant hired by the city said that the signals were not needed, Cox and the North Raleigh Coalition of Homeowners' Associations responded with a sophisticated analysis of their own. The eight-page document with maps, diagrams and traffic projections was offered to buttress their contention that signals will be needed at the Falls of Neuse at Coolmore Drive intersection and where the road meets Tabriz Point / Lake Villa Way. … "I'm not trying to hush him up," Lacy said. Cox has not been accused of claiming that he is an engineer. But Lacy says he filed the complaint because the report "appears to be engineering-level work" by someone who is not licensed as a professional engineer.

I’m not trying to hush him up my ass. You don’t call an investigation into someone drawing a diagram because you are worried about public safety. How does that work? “Your honor, this man put hundreds of lives in danger with a Power Point presentation and an illicit use of Google Maps!”
State Mandated Licensing has zero, nada, bupkis to do with public safety. It only survives as a way to fleece businesses and individuals out of their money or as to act as a barrier to entry.
My addition onto my house? Cost me $150 for the city inspector to come out. He leaned on the fence, saw there was construction, then demanded his graft asked for a check. He didn’t check the foundation. He didn’t look at the electrical wiring. He did nothing that indicated that the structure being worked on was safe and sound. And if the whole thing fell down due to poor construction, neither the inspector nor the city are liable for anything.
When I was a photographer, the largest photography studio around was constantly pushing for the city to require licensing for wedding photographers. Oh, and that company would be the one to decide if your pictures passed or not. This wasn’t to protect brides from shitty composition, this was a blatant attempt to keep other photographers from competing.
And now we have a city employee who gets his ass handed to him and instead of manning up and saying “Yeah, well maybe you have a point” or even illustrating where the man may have made an engineering mistake, he has the man investigated.
I have no problem with private entities providing certifications. I have a big issue with the gov’t stepping in and making it mandatory.
