Why carrying with a round in the chamber is a good idea
A while back, and I can’t recall the exact post but I put up a quote about a guy talking to another gun owner who decided that it was too dangerous to carry with a round in the chamber, and he could always just rack the slide, right? The other guy said something to the effect of “Who said you will have both hands free? You make be pushing your children out of the way or defending yourself against the knife. How will you convince your gun to fire then?”
Now, I’m going to browbeat Sean Sorrentino for his comment because I think the purpose of the video was to show how not having one in the chamber is a bad idea more than ‘how to handle a situation’, but he does have a good point
Watching the video it appears that she lost the engagement long before the video starts. She adopts a purely reactive stance against an unknown person bothering her. I think instead she should have gone after him verbally to force him to keep his distance. She failed the “interview” where he sizes her up for his attack.
Self defense isn’t just the tool you use. It’s also about awareness, avoiding situations when you can, and doing what you can to deescalate the situation with the least amount of danger to yourself. Sometimes it means shooting the bastards, but you want to not get to that point if possible.
Hat Tip Say Uncle who’s main line of self defense is his steely gaze and the goatee that says “If you mess with me, I will eat your liver while it’s still attached to your body”.
