In a recent news article, Senator Ellen Bogdanoff (R) spoke against Senate Bill 234 that would allow Floridians the choice as to if they openly carry their firearms or not by saying there is a way to solve the ‘printing’ issue without allowing Open Carry. I have written her a polite email and, if you are a Floridian, I  ask that you do the same.

My letter is as follows

Dear Senator Bogdanoff,

I am writing concerning your position on Open Carry outlined in the Sun Sentinel (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/columnists/fl-gun-laws-mayocol-b013011-20110129,0,6377558.column). In the article you say

"I think [the bill] is a little bit overkill," said state Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff, a Republican who represents parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties.
...
"There's a way to solve [this] without allowing people to openly carry," said Bogdanoff.

Accidental exposure of firearms is only one of the problems we Floridians face. We’re also one of only seven states that ban Open Carry, making Florida unusual in its law.

Twenty four years ago, we were warned of “blood in the streets” and “wild west shootouts” over the liberalization of our concealed weapons permits. In over two [ed. dangit, I said two which is 40 years. Oh well, hopefully that one faux pas doesn’t negate the entire letter] a score, these predictions have not come to pass. In every other state, the loosening of gun laws has not resulted in such predicted bloodshed or even increased crime which is why it dismays me that the same arguments are being made today against the push to allow Floridians the choice in how they carry their pistol.

This isn’t just about accidental exposure, it’s about freedom to choose. One out of every twenty four Floridians have gone through the process of getting a concealed weapons permit, requiring a background check as well as being fingerprinted, and have shown to be some of the most law abiding citizens there are. These same people will continue to follow the law regardless if their pistol is visible or not. We should not listen to those who naysay this proposal by claiming the same things that they have been repeatedly shown to be wrong on.

Some people find discomfort in two individuals of differing skin colors holding hands. Should we make laws based on that? Of course not, and we shouldn’t make laws based on what makes a very small minority uncomfortable when it comes to firearms. Open Carry events are held monthly all over the state of Florida and for the most part, people generally do not notice our firearms. Those that do tend to be simply curious about the law and ask us questions.

There’s no reason to continue the unusual ban against Open Carry which has never been shown to cause any sort of issues in the forty three other states that it is allowed in. Considering these facts, I ask that you consider supporting Senate Bill 234 and allow Floridians the freedom to select the carry method that best fits their situation.

Sincerely,

Robb Allen
