Just intuition, nothing solid or anything I can back up with links and whatnot, but I believe we’re going to see a stealth attempt at some pretty strict gun control within the next few years.
Hear me out.
As much as I want to see Obama leave after one term in shame, I’m not confident it will happen. I like Palin, agree with what she says, but do not see her as President material. But, watching the GOP turn on her gives me the feeling they’re going to go with yet another Democrat-Lite like Romney. And the GOP will lose because the anger that got them into the House and so many state legislatures will not stand for it and either vote 3rd party or sit home.
Add into this equation that Republicans are not our friends and I see plenty of desire to look ‘bipartisan’ that it wouldn’t surprise me to see them throw us gun owners under the bus. Toss in a few dumb statements by the like of Cheney and Levy and that’s enough cover for the statists on the right to have something to hang their bipartisan hat onto.
Gut feeling is we’ll see a plethora of really dumb bills much like McCarthy’s abomination. Lots. It won’t matter how stupid they are, they will just keep coming. After a while, our enemies will use anyone who votes against all of them (as they should) as NRA backed shills / Uncompromising / whatever the insult-du-jour is so that eventually they back one or two bills just to show they’ll go along to get along.
That’s what I worry about. Not someone coming up with good legislation (and there is room for that, but it involves gutting the current mess we have now) that might reach too far, but little, tiny attacks from all over.
We need to be alert and not rest on thinking gun control is a dead issue.
