MJ Mollenhour tries out the ~~Chippendale’s~~ ~~ChiaPet~~ Chiappa Rhino

I got to fire the Chiappa Rhino revolvers today at the SHOT show’s Media Day at the Range. This review is short because what I wanted most to experience was Chiappa’s claim of “drastically” reduced recoil. I mean, really, to refer to a .357 magnum revolver as “tamed” is quiet an assertion.

I’ve seen the videos. Muzzle flip seemed .38 Special more than .357 Magnum. But was it hype and selective editing? Read MJ to find out.

I had wondered if it would work as well as they claimed. I was interested before, and this review has moved it firmly onto my "want" list.

I like the design.

I do wonder what happens if you have a kaboom. On a traditional revolver, it is the top chamber/topstrap that takes the damage. On the Rhino, the bottom chamber is what will kaboom and thats right next to the shooter's hand.

Well, damn. Knew I should have held out. Oh well, it is definitely not past the "will it break" phase of testing, so just as well I have cause to wait longer...

Put it on your want list confidently. I mixed 38 Special and 357 Magnum round in the cylinder when I shot it at Media Day...while there was a perceptible difference when firing it, it didn't translate into a huge difference in sight reacquisition. Color me and one of my cohorts as VERY impressed with the mechanics of the gun as far as that goes. Liked the wide, flat trigger and the trigger was heavy but had a fairly predictable break point.

It's on my buy list.

I'd like to know why you guys even patronize a gun show that doesn't allow people to carry guns inside.

"Per Sands Expo Convention Center (SECC) policy, personal firearms or ammunition are not allowed. Only firearms on display by exhibitors whose firing pins have been removed (and have been inspected by SHOT Show Safety Advisors) will be permitted on the show floor."

If guns make you safer, these seem like stupid rules, particularly at a gun show.

Guns are dangerous items, much like kitchen knives, table saws, pneumatic nailers, household cleaning agents, and stoves.

Go read all the stories of people having negligent discharges. 99 times out of 99, what were they doing? Right, handling the firearm.

At a gun show, everyone will be picking up weapons capable of launching projectiles at ludicrous speeds. Testing out firearms requires you to pull the trigger. In a single room with thousands of people and firearms, the less likely someone is to accidentally set on off, the better.

Now, the convention center's rules are no guns. At the NRA convention where we had the first blogger meet up, there were no such rules. Thousands of people milled about all the firearms and there were no issues. I know I was armed at the time, as were a lot of the other bloggers.

The difference was that we were not handling our firearms. They're perfectly safe while encased in a holster. In fact, when I remove my firearm from my person, it's done by taking off the gun while it's still in the holster, thus lowering the number of times I must make contact with it.

I don't particularly care for the "no guns at all" rule, but we've had years of dealing with people like you who demand ridiculous rules. We're gaining ground as more and more states are liberalizing their gun laws, so I'm ok with the progress right now.

"Fugly" was the first thing to come to mind.

And yes, I'm also curious what happens when one of then eventually blows up. I kind of suspect that the force of the blast will want to go more down than up, so the shooter will get the nickname "Stumpy".
