Jumpin’ Jimminy, did someone screw up and pump stupid-juice into the water supply? I don’t think I have ever seen a bigger display of hypocrisy than the hundreds of people saying “We know for absolute certain that the crazed whacko who did the shooting in Tucson is not affiliated with any party but the Right / Tea Party / Palin / Limbaugh is totally responsible”.

W.T.F.??????

How deluded do you have to be to say “I know, without a doubt that this glass in front of me contains nary a molecule of dihydrogen monoxide… but it’s WETTER ‘N A GOLDFISH’S ASS ON TUESDAY!!!!!”

Orwell had it all wrong. It doesn’t take an oppressive government to create a system of doublespeak. It just takes a large segment of the population so tied to a particular political party that doesn’t even represent them that doublespeak will simply evolve from the desire to protect that identity at all costs.

The oppression? That’s merely a side effect.

There *IS* a huge over-representation of liberals among the chattering class, which is what you hear, but they're finding out that their influence is greatly weakened. Thus, the hysteria, as they ramp the rhetoric up to 11.

It's really disintegrating as any political movement that can swing the vast middle of the electorate, and is turning into in-group signaling behavior (to establish who's still in the club and who's not). But it's the 20% talking to each other.

That's why the latest "we need more gun control" meme is so pathetic. There's no chance in hell that Congress would consider serious gun control after the last election. The only reason anyone is talking about it at all is because of the need to close tribal ranks. Signaling.

I think the stratagy is "get there first with the most (obnoxious)"

If pulled off properly, they then get to both 1)present their side of the story first 2) so annoy and turn off the reader that they'll fail to get and measure a balanced set of opinions.

Want another example? Check out this 'shopped picture. It was out so quickly, I have to question if the body had been cut down first. How many people do you think know Sparkman took his own life?

I can't decide whether I find it heartening or non-credible (which needs to become a word, because so many people have a wrong understanding of "incredible"), when I hear folks say that 20% of the population self-identifies as Liberal.

I live in one of the LESS Liberal areas of Portland OR, and even here, my take is that at least 85% self-identify as Liberal, and something like 40% self-identify as VERY Liberal.

Sooo, either there are significant areas of the country where the number is more like 5%, to offset our numbers (the heartening view), or the 20% claim is simply wrong (the non-credible view).

I prefer the heartening view. But I'm still stocking up on supplies...
