Got a new video card today. During it’s installation, the motherboard died. Had to buy a new mobo.

Windows 7 refused to open. Had to reinstall.

Am reinstalling right now.

Did I mention this sucks?

The SandCastle has written off M$FT for good. We will not upgrade to Win7. Any new systems will be configured for Linux. I've been using it as a primary system for a couple years. The SandCastle Queen recently transitioned and she likes it too. Once I showed her the software installer she exclaimed "Hey, this free program does more than the one I paid for!"

M$FT's attitude isn't quite H&K's
"Because you suck and we hate you". Rather it's more "M$FT, because you don't really have any other choice." with the understanding that a Mac will cost you >2x for the same hardware and you have to be a certified geek to use Linux.

'cept now that has changed. Ubuntu is easier to install than windows (no 20 digit random license code to input), and it just works!

You can try it too without interfering with your current windows setup. Tri-dub dot ubuntu dot com. Give it a go.

Meh, it's a holy war when it comes to OS's with the priests and preachers on all sides.

I'm a .Net developer. The company I work for is 12 people strong and yet because of the ubiquity of Windows and the .Net framework being one of the best development platforms out there, we can remain competitive with companies that are exponentially bigger.

I have no issues with Linux. The more UI you put on it, the more it starts becoming like Windows. You can't expect your grandmother to be able to recompile the latest drivers for her video card so she can surf GeriatricsGoneWild.com and NursingHomeNasties.net. As Linux flavors become more and more user friendly, you'll see them become more like Windows and Mac.

And there are two problems with Macs - Their price and their users ;)

To each his own. I've had amazing success with Windows. My parents ran XP for 7 years without virus protection and never got a single virus (it's easy to do, just don't log in as an admin..). I've had linux boxes crash on me. Yeah, I'm sure it's something I did wrong, but still, it crashed. I've worked on Macs which were a joy when everything was working correctly and a nightmare when they weren't.

Regardless, I make my money developing Windows software, so I'm sticking with Win7 as my OS. I wouldn't dream of telling anyone they shouldn't use something else if they so feel like it.

Well, I might steer them away from the Mac, just so they don't end up standing in line overnight for the newest iProduct.

Since the Win95 generation, windows has not been very good at surviving a motherboard change without really freaking out. There were some tricks that you could use on Win95-98-etc to get it to completely forget it's hardware so that it could re-find itself but I haven't bothered keeping up with it to know if it would work on the newer windows os or not. I mostly do UNIX(like) stuff now days. Personally, I like OpenBSD although I know it isn't for everybody. At work, I quite often build a new server on a HDD in a build box and then just swap the HDD into one of the production boxes to put it into use. It's never a problem even when the old buildup box has an old AMD processor and the production box has multiple multi-core Xeons. It just works.

I've never had much in the way of problems with windows when switching out motherboards, there was usually just a fifteen minute or so delay at the log in screen as windows scurried about detecting all the new hardware and slapping generic drivers into place to get it to work.

Steady Amber light means it cannot see the internet. That is the complete entry under troubleshooting connection problems. Thanks for the help, Steve.

It so reminded me of the Venture Brothers episode with the space station and the giant white monolith with a big red light labeled "PROBLEM".

That was a great Venture Brothers episode. Lots of users like Macs. Even some Admins like Macs. Computers are like guns; there is no perfect computer/gun for everyone. When new people to guns ask "what gun do you carry?" I tell them and then say you need to shoot every gun you can before you pick one or two. Macs however are like Glocks. They fit a wide user group but not every Admin would have one. I'm waiting for the last half of this years Venture Brothers to air; someday it just might.

You had to reinstall Windows because you changed out two major components at the same time (mobo and vidya card).

You should have been able to simply reactivate by calling Microsoft. Unless you had some weird issues with the SATA/IDE controller on the motherboard, or were using RAID from the motherboard. If either of those is the case, it had nothing to do with Microsoft, it was all hardware.

Joe, the mobo had raid built into it.

Some patch I had received must have been specific to some of the hardware on the mobo because it'd blue-screen pretty much instantly. So, yes it was hardware.

Windows XP is pretty good at finding new hardware after a motherboard swap, assuming that it can get to the disks.

What many don't realise is that it doesn't remove the OLD device drivers for the OLD motherboard that are no longer useful - they just timeout during boot, and sit there chewing memory (OK Swap-space) and CPU.

Significant increases in performance and stability can come from cleaning out the old stuff manually.

It's not computer related, but my brand of suck at the moment is the 16 hour drive with the family.

Currently we're in Ocala, FL.

I'm noticing that the early morning crowd here isn't a big fan of using turn lanes.
