Open Carry , Out of sight, out of mind

From Say Uncle comes this story about UK Soldiers* Cadets not being able to carry their rifles because they might ‘upset’ some people.

I seem to be having the same conversation about open carry with nominally ‘pro gun’ people. Don’t carry openly because you might upset people!!! OH NOES!

Because there seems to be a black hole in some people’s understanding of my position, let me clarify it here – I want Open Carry to be legal here in Florida (and in every other state, but I can only work locally on this issue). At the same time, I want Concealed Carry to continue, and if you are not comfortable with carrying a firearm on your person, I want you to be able to make that choice.

Open Carry, something legal in 43 other states, has caused so few issues as to be considered statistical noise. There is no reason for any pro-gun person to fight or vote against it. Feel free to make all the tactical arguments for those have validity, but to claim that OC harms the movement or is bad PR is to claim ignorance.

*Correction, these were cadets, not soldiers.

Hmmm. Wonder if the Politicians would stop harassing the People if the issuance of a CCW permit automatically allows one to Open Carry? After all, if the intent is to let people carry concealed for their self defense, and one has to jump through hoops to get the license, does that not automatically imply that the Armed Citizen who has the permit is trained and considered safe enough to wear his/her weapon any way they desire? After all, if the Powers that Be are concerned that an open display of weapons might Disturb the Peace, then why are even Park Rangers allowed to carry their weapons openly, let alone the Police? If the Sauce is good enough for the Goose....

Yeah, that whole "People might be upset" idea is bogus.

People see guns all the time on TV. Cops carry the on duty. It's not like people don't see guns.

The times I've open carried, where I could, no one ever said a word or even looked at me funny. (OK, they looked at me funny but that's because of the kilt, not the gun.)

Quibble about the story from Britain - not soldiers, 12-18 year old cadets of a military school. So an element of "children should not carry guns" - still stupid to stop it, these are VERY well-trained "children."

At the very least, allowing both open- and concealed-carry is important to keep accidental exposure of a concealed weapon from becoming a crime.
