One of my major gripes with progressives is their blind faith that politicians and / or our “elites” not only have our best interests at heart, but that by their nature somehow they are possessed of such keen intellect that they can craft laws regarding topics which they have no current knowledge.

This happens quite often in my chosen line of work. Developers assume that since they know how to program a computer, they can write any sort of program. This is not always the case. While I could technically write a financial application, the lack of insight I have into the financial industry would mean that anything I could craft would be fraught with errors. Sure, the application would run correctly and not crash, but the computations would be all wrong.

Politicians operate in the same manner. Health care, medical research, communications, energy, automotive engineering, etc. Most politicians have no background in the industries they seek to regulate and thus craft laws how they think things should work rather than around how they actually function. And in their haste to look busy, they craft laws regarding things they know nothing of and they do so haphazardly, many times making things worse than had they just left them alone.

For a clear example, let’s look at Caleb’s latest post on how he has to wait 5 days to purchase a pistol, but can walk out of a store with a rifle on the spot

Apparently Washington State has a waiting period for people that want to purchase a handgun and don’t currently have a Washington Concealed Pistol License.

However, the waiting period doesn’t apply to rifles.

Let that sink in for a minute. You cannot purchase a .22 revolver today because you might be angry and want to kill someone, but there is nothing stopping you from picking up a high powered 30.06 and a case of ammo and picking off your target from a quarter mile away.

Anti-gunners are just full of these kinds of gems. Because they don’t understand firearms, because they have no comprehension of even the basic mechanics of them, they try to assist politicians (who are just as ignorant, mind you) in crafting a patchwork of laws they feel will somehow improve society. And we end up with crap like this.

In Florida, I am allowed to carry into a restaurant that serves alcohol. I’m even allowed to have a drink with my dinner. I’m not allowed to sit at the bar. Make any sense? To the anti’s, probably but to any rational person no.

This is why I fight against bigger government. What they do, they don’t do well and they do too much of it as it is.
