Riddle me this one

Why is it if you are convicted of a felony, you are considered so dangerous to society that you forfeit your right to ever own a firearm ever again, yet you are still permitted to run for an elected office?

Bad taste, tacky, and a firing offense, but a felony? Really? Strip your civil rights from you forever felony?

There's got to be more to this than a two sentence Reynolds blurb.

He's not a felon until he's convicted, Robb. I believe that's Canthros's point. Y'know, just like the Duke lacrosse players weren't felons, because they were only charged, and never convicted. The same thing could happen here.

Start over. John Doe is a convicted felon for offering a cat pelt to a Floridian while in Miami. For the rest of his life, for the high crime of simply suggesting he had the fur of a Domestic Short Hair, he is no longer allowed to own a firearm.

He is, however, allowed to hold an elected office.

That's the point I'm trying to make.

Sorry, I sort of live and die professionally by a pedantic obsession with detail.

That said, is the difference between your average modern pol and a convicted felon so great? In many cases, it seems only that the felon was caught. Denying felons the right to hold office would have the entertaining side effect of forcing Jim Traficant to register his toupee, instead of himself, though.

Any criminal can be elected to congress. Witness the current crop in washington. And particularly the uber liberal former federal judge that was impeached by a democrat controlled congress for corruption and taking bribes. The congressman from my district, Alcee Hastings. (spit spit, disinfect keyboard)
Hey, where else can an impeached, corrupt, disbarred, sleazy lawyer go to make a living except to congress to join his "peeps"?
