I thought they were supposed to be omnipresent?
TAMPA - Police are searching for a man with a knife who tried to break into a family's home late Thursday night. The homeowner and his wife let a guest out of their back door about 11 p.m., then heard a knock on the door a few minutes later. Believing it was their friend, the homeowner opened the door and saw a man with a black cloth wrapped around his head and a silver kitchen knife in his hand, Tampa police Lt. Lee Bercaw said. The homeowner struggled to shut the door and was stabbed in the left hand before he could get the door closed. The attacker then began breaking the window next to the door, Bercaw said. The homeowner, fearing for the safety of his wife and their two young children, grabbed his personal handgun and fired several shots at the window, Bercaw said. The attacker ran north up the alley behind the home at 2206 N. Boulevard, Bercaw said.

Let me get a gripe out of the way that has nothing to do with self defense and everything to do with stupid journalists. They won't give the man's name because the robber is still on the loose, but they post his FULL $#&*ing ADDRESS with pictures on the web site. Good going morons.
Back to self defense. Here is yet another clear cut case of someone defending their lives with a firearm. I know nothing of the physical stature of the thug nor the homeowner, but I do know the homeowner had to protect his family. He could have just called 911 so the police could come by the house to draw chalk lines around the bloody bodies of him and his family. He could have confronted the thug in hand to hand combat while his wife called 911 so the cops could come out to draw the chalk outlines. There's many options available.
Now, I doubt even Ubu52 would say this man was not in the right to do what he did, but like most anti-gun people, she has a magical barrier where self defense is ok, and anything outside of that is not.
Had this man lived in a more densely populated area? Ubu52 doesn't think he should own a gun. Had he stepped out of his house to run an errand? She thinks he should be easy to kill because he shouldn't have the right to carry the best tools for defense on him. For someone who claims to want to save lives, she sure does like putting people at a lethal disadvantage.
