Out of sight, out of mind

*Sigh* I guess it happens even to the best of us.

I was in Dunkin Donuts this morning getting some coffee and munchkins when I reached back to get my wallet. Apparently, my shirt had snagged on my holster and viola… I had a negligent Open Carry.

There was a line, and I had been standing there with the Glock out where everyone could see the whole time. I noticed the gentleman behind me was looking at the pistol when I de-snagged my shirt. I gave him a smile, said "Oops" and covered it back up. He just smiled back at me and looked up at the menu.

I got my coffee and donuts, paid, and then left.

Here I am in Florida, where OC is illegal and somehow in a room full of people, only one noticed the pistol on my hip. There were no screams of horror, no mad panic rush to escape, and (most thankfully for me) no calls to the Po-Po for 'Man with a gun'.

Still, I need to be a hell of a lot more careful.

Why I want open-carry to be 100% legal personally. Politically I want it to be legal because if somebody would prefer to carry their gun openly, I have no issue with that. I prefer concealed for both comfort and to control the situations where people are aware of my gun. Still accidents happen, and clothing can shift, and garments can be shifted by weather and movement.

Exposing my gun should be no different than exposing my ass crack (which I do far too frequently given that I HATE belts) *ooops* Cover up.

I think in Florida we are almost there to start petitioning for OC. Of course we will have issues with the whiners in Palm Beach, Broward and some Miami Dade but nobody gives a damn about an accidental exposure.

Frankly, I'd be happy (for now) with fixing the law to exempt "accidental exposure" from the open carry laws. But you'll never get open carry activists behind that, and the NRA won't bother unless someone is actually prosecuted for it.

This is one area where MN nailed it the first time. Stuff like that is written into our law as specifically not a crime based, no doubt, on the troubles you guys have in states that led the shall issue charge.

My ONE saving grace - my ONLY one - is that I look like a cop. I am overly paranoid about accidentally flashing my gun, which is why I have tuckable holsters, even though I don't like them as much.

If you've read any of the "how to spot a concealed gun" bits, one is "constantly checks outer layer" or some such ... yeah, that's me. EVERY time I get out of a car, out of my chair, reach over my head ... a hand swings back and makes sure my cover is still where it belongs.

While the thought of negligent OC scares the crap out of me, most people in FL are OK with guns. Just the other night in class the professor was talking about how two of his partners (law firm) carry guns at work. Then some young girl spoke up about how she just got her concealed carry license. About 5 others in class said something along the lines that they have theirs too. The guy that sits next to me is from New York and he said he though everyone in FL carried a gun. But no matter how comfortable most people are with it, it only takes one jerk to ruin your life for an innocent mistake. We definitely need to be pushing harder for OC here in FL.

I'm up above Orlando, and I remember the first time I got 'made' after starting to carry again. I was up on a counter looking at wiring above a drop ceiling when I stretched too far and my shirt rode up. My client asked me "So what do you carry?" and then told me about her Kimber .45 and that she was thinking about getting another 1911 style.

I've taught another client how to shoot, and one of my clients wants me to get the certifications to do concealed carry classes. I only know of one client who might have a problem with it, and I usually deal with the gun friendly element in his office.

I KNOW that on a couple of occasions I was made by a police officer, and another time by a private detective. Nobody asked me any questions, it's just accepted here.

I'm with you, though, I want open carry legalized so I don't have to worry, and I don't take any chances that someone might see if I can avoid it.

And this is exactly why open carry should be a non-issue wherever possible - namely, everywhere. Because shirts do ride up. Sweat does make clothing print more.

And, in the end, no one cares.

Exposing a firearm due to a clothing malfunction does not change the reality of the situation - you are still carrying a firearm peacefully, responsibly, and maturely. The only difference now is that immature little twats can wet themselves at the sight.

Which, predictably enough, did not happen.

For all the awesomeness Florida has (like legal automatic knives), you all still need to work on a few things ;).
