Remember when tattoos were edgy, rebellious, and not available at the local mall?

Yeah, neither do I

Nothing like going out for an Orange Julius, picking up a nice handbag, and getting that dolphin (#451!) on your ass you always wanted.

Granted, this one is a few stores down from the Apple store, so I bet their business is kicking.

Today's tattoo is the day after tomorrow's ugly skin blemish. Yes, they look all kickin' now when the colors are bright and fresh and the lines sharp and distinct, but give them 20 years of cell growth and aging and it's another story. My advice for a sure-fire investment for 20 years from now? Buy a chain of tattoo-removal parlours.

I spent 15 years as a commercial photographer, and I can't think of a single piece of art I created permanently affixed to my body, much less someone else's.

I can think of several reasons to get a tattoo, but not because I like the *art* so much I'd like to permanently affix it to my (or your) body.

E.G. a Marine getting a tattoo of the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor wouldn't be because the *artwork* is so spectacular. But rather, the association with the Corp, itself, is meaningful. And that association never goes away.

I love how tramp stamps are called "Arschgeweih" in German...it means "Ass antlers"!

I have two tattoos. One I got when I was 20, which is a horribly cliched rose and which I try to forget is even there. The second I got when I was 34, after much thought. And both are in places that I figured would deteriorate the least with age. Even at TWENTY I was thinking about that.

Getting tattoos hurts hellaciously, so I think two is my limit.

I refer you to The Simpsons. Season 1, Episode 1. "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire". Bart gets a tattoo ... from a shop in the mall. In 1989. Clearly, Mr. Groening was ahead of his time.
