Tam mentioned something in the comments yesterday regarding my little booboo

Dude, did you try superglue? If it bleeds like that, it's a candidate.

I knew about superglue for cuts, but I figured I'd just wrap it in a Band-Aid and call it a day. This morning's shower loosened everything up and the cut opened back up which I didn't really notice that until I got my clothes on, so I cleaned up and just put another Band-Aid on.

All through the day, thing would happen and I'd bump my thumb and open the cut again, bleeding like crazy. That, and washing hands ruined the Band-Aid or got everything soggy so I said screw it and grabbed the superglue.

Working like a charm and I was even able to wash the dishes with no problems.

Kind of cool, in a geeky way.

the only down side of using superglue is that it burns soo bad when you first put it on, but 10-20 seconds later its fine. I use it all the time, and yes it does freak people out. when i was in college i used it during class when one of my cuts(left fore arm) opened up in class, the teacher passed out, granted it was a liberal arts class, but that was funny.

No Adrian, it wasn't. Superglue is a derivative of a glue called Eastman 910 which is used, or at least has been used, they may have something better now, to glue skin panels onto airframes of aircraft instead of using rivets and threaded fasteners. Eastman 910 performed successfully on aircraft capable of speeds in excess of Mach 2.5.

Superglue is much weaker than the original but it is mighty handy. You are right that it was used in the Nam.

With a similar concept, there's a product called "New Skin" that advertises itself as a liquid bandage and antiseptic. It works pretty well and has a relatively long shelf life. Here's a link: http://www.newskinproducts.com/liquid-bandage.htm

Nah, I generally heal really fast (although as I've gotten older, it's slowed down considerably), it's just that this cut in on my thumb, which I use constantly.

I keep superglue in all my first aid kits. It's handy stuff. Newskin is okay, but not as good as superglue in my experience.

Michael, Thanks for the link. I know hospitals have had bio-absorbable superglue for a few years (my Mom swiped a bottle for her own first-aid kit, and has grabbed for it a few times since the wife turned her on to high-end knives)

I'm gonna have to pick up a bottle and check it out!

When I had my cardiac bypass surgery, the surgeon closed the skin incision with superglue. It worked quite well, never opening up and never bleeding so much as a drop.

My younger brother experienced the same thing about four years earlier. He was still dopey on painkillers when the surgeon came by on his rounds. He asked the surgeon why there were no sutures visible and the surgeon answered that they were all internal. His immediate response was, "So, what did you do? Crawl out my ass?"

Hilarious, DJ. My wife is scheduled for surgery this summer, and her external incision will also be glue. I'm interested to see how it looks.

Just a warning about using superglue to seal up wounds: make sure the wound is clean, clean, clean before you seal it up, or you might find the infection you have started to be annoying or dangerously unhealthy. Especially on deep cuts, the wound needs to be irrigated, with heavy use of antiseptics, before sealing up with glue to insure the sealed-up flesh won't go septic.

Straightarrow, you are right, but as the straight dope website says http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2187/was-super-glue-invented-to-seal-battle-wounds-in-vietnam states that medical use was considered and sprays were developed for use on the battlefield.

Uh huh, but E 910 predates Superglue. So we are both right, I was just pointing out that Superglue was a follow-on idea and not specific purpose invented but adapted from a prior product.
