Racism is alive and well

The uproar began when the all-white Zeta Tau Alpha team from the University of Arkansas beat out five other sorority teams to win last weekend's national final in the Sprite Step Off competition. A YouTube video of their performance, inspired by the movie "The Matrix," generated hundreds of comments.

Posters questioned everything from whether a white group should have been allowed to compete to whether judges wowed by the unlikely competitors inflated their scores to let them win.

"Good Job but let the Black folks have their own thing for once!!!" wrote one commenter posting under the name "titetowers" who said the Zeta Tau Alpha team did well but should not have won.

Here's a thought for you titetowers? How about blacks get their own section at the back of the bus? Would that make you happy? Because that's what your asking for you racist piece of shit.

Face it; racism has been ingrained into the American consciousness initially by its existence but more recently, and arguably more effectively, by the very fight to rid ourselves of it. It will never go away as long as there is an advantage for one group or another to keep it alive. Quite frankly, the anti-discrimination laws have forced it underground where we may never be able to stamp it out. Much like the difficulty of killing the cockroaches that hide in the walls of a house, or rats in the sewers.

In my opinion, if the government got out of the business of racism and laws requiring signage at businesses that wanted to exclude certain groups were passed, then racism would be forced out into the open where it could be combated with social pressure. I believe that a vast majority of Americans, when faced with it, would choose not to patronage a business that had a sign excluding groups of people even if they don’t, themselves, belong to those groups. They would choose to NOT carry the stigma of being a bigot because everyone deep down wants to be a good person. Once Americans get used to making the decision to not be a bigot, it will become second nature, they will start to live it and believe it.

I know, my friends say that I am some kind of a Polyanna and that it wouldn't work that way, but I have to believe that my fellow Americans are capable of making the right decisions... at very least, in this.

your belief of a vast majority of Americans is wrong, just look at all the churches who exclude gays and lesbians, you don't see people denouncing the church they belong to because they're exclusionary

C: Sadly you probably have a point, but maybe not. My plan is more geared towards Racism than intollerance of other minority groups. However, I believe there would be a cascading effect that would eventually benefit these other groups as well. The reason being, the signs would become visible representations of intollerance and social pressure would move people to be more accepting. The more accepting that people become, the more open they would be to accepting in other ways.

I agree though, The "Death Cult"* members would be a hard nut to crack. They pretend to be so nice and tolerant, but harbor such hate for those who do not blindly swallow their line. However, I see a softening in the church that gives me hope that the young aren't as infected by the intolerance that we have seen from the elders. They would come around, it would just take longer.

(*) For the particularly dense, yes I just refered to Christianity as a death cult. Turn about is fair play. The Christians have been calling other religons "Satanic" and "Cultish" for as long as they have existed without a care for what the truth of the matter is. So can I. Here is my evidence: Ever go to a church? Look, crosses everywhere, on the wall, on necklaces, on their bibles. Well... a cross is an EXECUTION DEVICE. Therefore, Death Cult.... deal with it.

I suppose my understanding of Christians could be a little skewed as I grew up in one of those ultra-religous intolerant familys. So I can admit that ALL Christians may not be like that. The problem is, I have seen too many of the ones that were to believe it is solely anti-christian propiganda. So, Having had a run in with "real" Satanists, I tend to be leary of them, and likewize, having been locked in a church closet and told through the door that I wouldn't be allowed to leave until I repented of my evil ways (or died there); along with having been damned to hell, like "officially", by catholic priests on two other occasions, I am likewize leary of christians (/catholics... same boat) whom I don't already know to be good people. I think that gives me more like an old colorized B movie level understanding of christianity rather than the colorbook and crayola level understanding, but I might be wrong.

That said, I admit that maybe I shouldn't go cow-tipping sacred cows and calling Cristianity a death cult is probably going a little too far. I do have to stand by my opinion that when it comes to Christians and certian groups (gays, athiests, non-christians, etc. but mostly "teh gayz") It will take much more work to be rid of intollerance and discrimination. Many christian groups (maybe not all) see that discrimination as the moral thing to do, some even see it as their mission.

Maybe I have just seen too much of the dark underside of Christianity to buy in anymore.
