SEATTLE - Three unarmed security guards were following orders last month when they stood by without intervening as a 15-year-old girl was badly beaten in a downtown Seattle bus tunnel.

Emphasis mine.

Just following orders? Excuse me? There is a 15 year old girl being beaten half to death and you're just going to stand there because you're afraid of getting reprimanded? Cowards.

What a horrible way to learn a life lesson.

King County Sheriff's Sgt. John Urquhart said the guards were right to follow their training.

King County Sherriff' Sgt. John Urquhart is a fucking moron. The cops couldn't do shit, and society is better off not listening to (nor paying) jackasses like this. Not that there aren't plenty of people out there who would like the police to be omnipresent, but currently they aren't. I hope some day a group of teenagers beat Sgt. Urquhart's daughter while a group of people just sit and watch [hyperbole, people… hyperbole].

"We don't expect civilians to take police action. In this case, it was a violent fight, and they were outnumbered by this pack of people 3-to-1."

Full grown men against teenagers? I think that gives the ratio a little less 'oomph' than this coward implies.

What good is paying people to stand around? You could replace every last one of those guards with a cheap camera and have the exact same amount of 'security'.

Now, legally those guards are in the clear. I would never dream of being able to sue them for not putting themselves in harm's way. That's not how liberty works. But morally, those guards are beyond reprehension and should be shunned from society as cowards. As should Sgt. Urquhart.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, what if these guards had families at home and had been told that doing more than "Observe & Report" could be grounds for termination? With jobs, especially lower-level ones, being so tough to find, where do you draw the line between "Teenagers fighting, and the 'victim' possibly having had it coming" and "I'm willing to stop a teenager from getting beaten up even if it means my family has to go back on welfare" ?

At one point several years ago, I was employed by a security company.

Our 'training' consisted of ways to observe and report. Our job was to call 911 and provide accurate details.

We weren't armed and were primarily tasked with checking door locks and logging visitors. The stated philosophy was that the presence of a uniform would scare off potential trouble. It was policy to not approach threats but be visible.

During training we were told specifically our primary focus was company assets. Personnel off the clock and anything off of company property was off limits.

After the first incident I discovered they employees had no idea of the scope/limit of our duties. Being screeched at by the site supervisor for not going far enough beyond my job description led me to believe they had been intentionally misled. I was willing to do things in the grey areas but tasks she expected me to do were so far past the limits of the mission that they were expressly forbidden.

I'm not saying it's right .. just saying that's how it was.

Needless to say I quit. There are limits; even for a starving student.

I read this story earlier in the week, and the really disturbing part is what happened BEFORE the attack. Apparently, the girl was attacked by the same group of teens in Macy's, and was thrown out, even though she begged the cops not to make her leave. One of them allegedly said that they "do not help trouble making teenagers."

The teen group, alleged to be gang members with long rap sheets, caught up to her just down the street.

I wish I could find the original story, but it seems to have fallen down the memory hole.

And don't give the damn outnumbered thing either. I have prevailed against 3 once and four once. And guess what, I didn't give a damn about my job or reprimands or a damn thing else except making them sorry they ever started.

I am old now and not nearly as capable as I once was, but I still have my balls and some things a man just doesn't tolerate. For just plain males obviously their mileage varies. Fuck Urquarht and the security pretenders also. Fuck the police department that forced this girl back into the hands of these people and fuck everybody who sees any excuse for it.

Most states have "Good Samaritan " laws on the books. I'm wondering if you could stretch the definition to helping people in this kind of situation and use it to avoid getting fired. Nevertheless, as has been stated above, the is no job in the world that the loss of would make me not interfere in an attack like this.

I disagree. Cameras would provide much greater security than overpaid "eyewitnesses."

And why would I want to keep a job where I would get fired for doing the right thing?

And where were the bystanders? Was there not one person there with a pair enough to step in and say, "enough"? If one had stepped in, others a little more hesitant, would have followed.

Look at the video. The thugs ignored the guards. The guards were next to the girl and the attacker. Like within 3 feet.

I'd have to assume that they knew perfectly well that the guards would do nothing.

And as far as doing something yourself, it's the Peoples Republic of Seattle. Do you want to go to jail and lose your house for beating up some innocent gang members out having harmless fun?

The girl who did is has pleaded not guilty and her friends are saying that the victim started it by antagonizing them earlier. GAH. Rob, I've linked you on this in my blog. I didn't see a trackback.
