Police: Man with weapons cache was preparing for 'Armageddon'

Gregory D. Girard, 45, was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly storing approximately 20 weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Sounds like the guy could be a bit on the loony side, but the report indicates he was arrested for simply having the weaponry.

When I buy .22LR in bulk, $25 will net me around 1100 rounds. I still have 3/4 of a crate full of 7.62x54R sitting around. Thousands of rounds is child's play.

Geez in gun circles does any gun owner really count .22 ammo in individual amounts? I might have a 22 inventory, but its in box's of ammo not in each bullet.

Second, what gets me is that "He was also charged with the illegal possession of four police batons."
That's the first thing mentioned. The firearms aren't mentioned until much further down in the "article". And those were legal, every bit of it.

I probably have about 5,500 to 6,000 rounds of ammo in my little locker. 4,500 of that is .22 (about $45-$60 worth). All the ammo in there probably isn't worth much more than about $300.

Doesn't seem like such a big deal.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but his crime was "illegal" possession of less-lethal weapons. Note to self: if it doesn't kill on contact, don't buy it. Only crazy people buy capsaicin and batons (except, perhaps, Sierra Vista High School cheerleaders).

So to summarize:

1 20 firearms
2 several thousand rounds ammo
3 4 police batons
4 stockpiled food and medicine
5 camo clothing, vests, helmets and knives
6 handcuffs
7 4 Teargas grenades
8 4 pairs handcuffs
9 pepper balls

What is the problem? The food, medicine, and batons have all been recommended as emergency supplies by government officials, the firearms were licensed, and the ammo is not that outrageous.

Heck, I have way more than that in my house.

Well, he does appear to have been caching weapons...

And infernal device has a long pedigree going back to Guy Fawlkes or earlier. They probably mean the grenades.

I'm still trying to figure out what the guy had that was all that illegal. My guess after reading the article is the 4 tear gass grenades and the 4 police billy clubs are what he's being charged with. I guess I don't know the law up there in Mass, but are these really more than misdemeanors? Really? If so, why exactly are they revoking his license?

So an explosive or incendiary. A molotov cocktail or incendiary bomb, for instance.

There have been several online discussions on Finnish gun forums about how many guns one man needs. Somebody calculated that someone who actively hunts and takes part in official military reservist shooting sports needs a minimum of 17 firearms. (One can, of course, get by with a lot less, but having a firearm optimized for each sport brought the number up to that.)
