Hit Animal Kingdom yesterday with the family. Still can't get over the half-assed 'bag search' you have to go through. You could put a brick of C4 (complete with a Hollywood style timer and wires) by itself in a knapsack adorned with "I ♥ Martyrdom" and "Detonate if You Love Allah!" stickers and still get through.

Now, I find the searches annoying and insulting, but not so much where I'm not going to go. I realize they're only for show and so far, I've not been hassled since the 'security' personnel spend an average of 3/10ths of a second looking in each bag. I also realize they are ineffective and I'm still on my own if someone decides to cash in his 72 Virgin certificate or finally give into the voices in their head and once and for all rid the world of the rodent and his Anatidae cohort.

So, what I wonder is why? Why do they hassle their customers for absolutely no increase in security? I can only think of a few reasons

  1. A weak ass attempt at limiting their liability (Sure, someone mowed down the entire line to It's A Small World with a Ma Duce, but he must have gotten around our security guards some other way. Besides, he did those people a big favor.)
  2. To provide just enough to make dumb people "feel safer" that it increases business.
  3. Doing the bare minimum required by some governmental peckerwood knowing damn well that full body cavity searches ain't gonna stop a determined attacker so they just do what is required.

I'm hoping for 3, but bet 1 or 2 are the more likely scenarios.
