Buried in the lawsuit filed last month, county attorneys argued the HOT lanes, "encourage and enable a financially-able, privileged class of suburban and rural, primarily Caucasian residents from Stafford and Spotsylvania counties operating single occupancy vehicles ("SOV") unimpeded access on toll lanes."

In other words, it benefits wealthy white people.

Apparently, wealthy black and Asian people are not allowed to drive in the HOT lanes.

Everything is racial to many people. Everything. And while they're so busy pointing out that disagreeing with the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave is RACIST or that asking people to show identification to vote is RACIST, the real racism goes on unnoticed, lost in the noise.

Seriously, reading down in the article, one notes that the percentage of white population in Arlington is actually HIGHER than that of its "suburban" and "rural" neighbors.

So who is playing the race card on whom?

I lived there for a year in the early 80's and Arlington seemed to me to be practically identical to Palo Alto. Across the freeway is East Palo Alto, across the Potomac is DC...
"The board never actually discussed race as a factor and that air quality has always been the chief issue." I'm sure Palo ALto would come up with the same argument.

Rob, I've got an idea about this; that the only real racism these days that has a real impact on people is government subsidized, mandated, or otherwise blessed. Think about it - the KKK can't exactly burn crosses or have lynchings anymore. A business owner can't turn someone away for being a member of a protected class. Most any potential "hate crime" victim is just as able as anyone else to be lawfully armed for their own protection.
So, that leaves us with the government as the only entity that regularly thinks and acts in a racist manner in a way that meaningfully impacts peoples' lives. They do this through quotas for employment and contracting, through policies that affect non-whites based on perceived inability to help themselves, etc. There are mortgage lending rules, scholarship and tuition grant rules, testing rules, all sorts of places where the government uses race in an impactful way.
