Central disc protrusion contacting the spinal cord at C5-6

Yeah, it friggin' hurts.

To go completely off-topic: Wow, MRI's are amazing things! If we could do that with a relatively free-market system, I can't wait to see what innovations will come out of socialized medicine!

My wife had the same thing (C5-6). Her MRI looked much like yours does. I hope you get to feeling better soon. I can definitely relate to how your feeling.

Not only is that a great picture, the MRI place gave me a CD with ALL the MRI data on it. I can 'slice' through my neck from side to side as well as look from my jaw to my chest (and into my lungs) from top to bottom.

I needed an MRI, I made an appointment, and they saw me within a week. Can't wait until that's a 6 month thing rather than 4 or 5 days!

Right now? No. Surgery isn't in the cards as that's pretty extreme. I'm basically hanging myself for 10-15 minutes twice a day (they call it traction, I call it hanging. Just because the noose is velcro doesn't change anything) to stretch out my neck.

Going to have to talk to a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon to get some more options.

And lots of Ibuprofen.

I have a C4-5 herniation and let me say that you are actually lucky. One disc higher (where mine is) and it would put pressure on the medial nerve. That is the one that feeds into your hands. My hands go numb all the time because of mine.

Like yours, surgery isn't necessary but mine acts up every year or so and causes me to not be able to turn my head at all.

I feel your pain; had the 4/5 fused 2 years ago after 3 years of sleeping 15 minutes at a time and living on meds I'd rather not live on. Much better now, but the 6/7 is limping. I did the hanging thing and other physical therapy while I waited to make a decision, too. Beware: the recurrent laryngeal nerve is in the vicinity of the procedure, as well as other precious spots. My right vocal cord no longer moves. That's the risk ya take. Good luck!

I know that is miserable for you, but try mine. A fractured third cervical vertebra and the guy looks at you and says,"You'll be dead by morning."

He had the fracture right, but his prognosis was way wrong, that was 1jun66.

Still bothers me some, especially the hands and forearm thing, but it beats all Hell out of the prediction.

I have never had a herniated disc, but did have an impacted disc in my lower back that paralyzed me from the waist down in 71, temporarily. It still gives me some trouble at times. Whatever you do, most likely you will have residual effects, but any relief from the pain, I am sure will be welcome. Good luck.
