Greg and I hit Silver Dollar Shooters Club today for my very first trap shooting. Just like sporting clays, I'm hooked. And I didn't totally suck, either.

The third game, I kept count and I scored a 21. Not bad at all for only really shooting targets with a shotgun a few times. Didn't think about bringing a camera, but next time I just might.

I learned a few things

Racking your pump action shotgun can set off the voice activated thrower.
The little sponges on the ground are a great place to put the tip of your shotgun while loading another shell. Much better than one's shoe.
People who have fancy shotguns don't necessarily shoot well
The old guy in the wheel chair can shoot well
Being swept repeatedly with a shotgun is not a happy feeling. Old farts apparently don't care about this.
I shoot much better if I don't think about it. The sooner I get it out of the trap house, the better I seem to do.
Gonna have to get a nice O/U some day. The Mossberg works, but a man needs style points here and there.

So, now to figure out how to merge in IPSC AND trap AND sporting clays…

21 out of 25 is great for your first time.

As for #5, there's no excuse for it, but if there's an RSO present, he'll insist that all guns remain unloaded and open until just before calling for the bird. That's their idea of safety. I don't approve of carelessness because of that. Sweeping someone shouldn't happen ever.

Oh, I was standing behind the trap area, this guy was talking to his buddy and just pointing his shotgun willy nilly. He wasn't actively shooting, but who knows is his gun was unloaded or not?

Well, it WAS loaded. I mean, sure, the action was open and there were no rounds loaded in the shotgun, but Rule One never lies.

The old farts don't care though. Of course, I've also never heard of a ND at any of the local ranges resulting in anything other than peppered paint on the trap house.

One thing I have noticed, however, is that people tend to be more cautions about muzzle discipline with pump and semi-auto shotguns. With a double, you can obviously see from a distance that the gun cannot be fired. You can't always tell if the guy 20 yards away pointing his Remington 870 at you knows not to load his shotgun away from the firing line.

You bastard. I've been shooting trap long enough that I'm reloading my own shells to cut down on cost and the best I've ever shot is 20. *shakes fist*

Seriously, good job. It takes a lot of people a long time to hit the high teens and break into the 20's. If you had fun then stick with it. Knowing how to run a shotgun is great skill, and if you can hit a 4" disc flying away at 35ish mph then hitting Robbie McInmyHouerson at the end of the hallway is all that much easier. He's much bigger and can't move that fast.

Trap shooting is awesome. I got 18 my first go. I had only shot a shotgun 10 times before (that's rounds, not separate occasions. Of course, it was a 20 gauge semiauto so it kicked like a child patting you on the shoulder, but still...

Merging IPSC and Trap? It's called "3-gun". You'll need a rifle. And it's like crack. Seriously, I've seen marriages broken up because of 3-gun.*

Another +1 to Hap-hazard shotgun 4 rules. At my club the 4 rules are paramount...except on the trap field.

It does only appear to be the old-timers who seem to be doing it. The younger guys seems to be much better about where the muzzle of their closed shotguns point.
