What is 'tactical'?

I never think in terms of tactical. I think in terms of utility and reliability. Will the firearm put the round where I need it each and every time? That's the first thing. Any doodads I can hang off the side that might assist me in those endeavors are secondary in nature, and rarely make it past the "Man, that looks cool. Too bad it costs money" stage.

I don't have anything besides the standard plastic hand guards on my AR. Sure, rails would look cool, but outside of a light, I don't really have much use for anything hanging off the AR. I think a red dot is about all I'm going to ever really need on that thing that's anything near 'tactical'.

Even my dream of a KRISS Super V is based more on the fact that I'd like to have a .45 ACP carbine for home defense that could be controlled by my wife easier than the shotgun. Maybe that is tactical in nature, I don't know.

What say you? What makes something 'tactical'?
