Woke up this morning to a loud, constant beep emanating from the office. My nice APC UPS was informing me it was overloaded, so I reset it and everything was fine. Until a few minutes later when the same thing happened.

Reset. A few seconds. Overload.

Fine, I unplugged everything. Reset. Instant overload. Unplugged it from wall. Same thing.

Decided unit was tits up, and removed the internal batteries.

Hooray for expensive, broken stuff!

If it really is the battery, getting a new one from them is not hard. If it is the whole unit, poke around their webpage and they will give you a discount on a new one if you send them in the old one (they even provide the packaging and shipping lable, if I remember properly).

Oddly enough, the only 'power-related' problems I've ever had were with UPS units.

One almost burned the house down.

These days I go 'Commando' on AC power.

Maybe you should say hooray for keeping my expensive electronic equipment safe. Better to replace a 100 dollar UPS then to replace a monitor/PC and or data.

My 1500VA Belkin's batteries lasted about five years. They were on their last legs but still had enough juice to power my DSL modem & router for a couple of hours, and briefly charge my laptop after Hurricane Ike last year (it normally protects my desktop). It cost me about $60 to replace the two batteries inside. I now have UPS's for all my critical IT equipment.

Given that my last place the UPSes would trip every time one of the compressors in the wall ACs turned over I'm just as happy about having UPS for everything. This led to having a UPS for the cable modem and router alone (a unit that had about 10 seconds of runtime left in the batteries for any of the computers but would hold the "network closet" for as long as the rest of the UPSes would hold the computers).

2 months ago I had the similar symptoms on my APC UPS. New batteries solved my problem. But then my 2 cents may be worth just that.
