Thanks to everyone who commented on subscriptions. I spent the past few hours working on the system, and now you can subscribe to a particular post and get notifications when comments are added. Still need to write the code to allow for notifications of updates, but it's almost time for bed.

So, please do me a favor. Subscribe to this post and let me know if you get emails regarding updates. Let me know if it shows up in your spam folders (gmail is notorious for blocking stuff). Feel free to unsubscribe as well, you can always sign back up with another comment.

I'm subscribing one of my emails in this comment to test for myself. This means I'll be getting two emails for every comment - one admin email and then a notification of the comment itself.

Comment emails are sent in HTML format. Hopefully most people can read those without a problem.

I actually had to do something like this at work this week because we were sending mail from an Amazon instance and it was not getting through to AOL but we were getting to Yahoo and the rest of the bunch. From that one data point, I'd have to say that AOL is a bee-aych.

If you are having issues w/ just google, you could set whatever the equivalent of Postfix on your PC to send mail through google. That will only work though if you are at <500 emails a day.

SM, the problem lies somewhere deep in how I'm sending mails. My server should be set up right, with everything correct in DNS, and it's a fixed IP and not in a block that's spammy.

I don't know how, in the .Net code, to make sure the headers are correct so they're not labeled as spam. But thanks for playing. Let me know if you have any difficulties.

The email subject I see in notification mails include a – HTML escape for the dasy in the post title. Subjects should be plain text I think.

Gmail is shoving updates into my SPAM folder.

Interesting bits from the SMTP headers (which might be why it ends up as SPAM):

Probably not, Robb. That last line I posted (which is the start of the 'Received' records) is just your mail server contacting your local SMTP server, which is probably the same machine now that I think about it, and handing the message off for delivery.

The two lines above that are Google's system bitching about there not being any SPF records in your DNS zone for that domain that tie back to your public IP (which is in the rather large 72.87.64.0 - 72.92.127.255 block).

This link explains a bit about SPF, DNS, and even notes that Google/Gmail are sticklers on the issue.

You know, I realized my error the instant I posted that comment.

Then I remembered I probably didn't make the SPF records after server crash. And I was right.

Dangit... Hopefully now it's better
