You think someone is breaking into your house. You pick up the phone to dial 911. Some jackass has cut a cable, effectively cutting off your phone service.

Could you survive a break-in without the police?

My only problem would be shot placement in order to avoid hitting my dog which most likely will be covering most of the center of mass while munching on various face parts.

If you're still alive after she lets go, I should be able to handle it from there.

The same thing happened to us a couple of years ago in Mississippi. Some jackass was looking for copper to sell and sliced a chunk out of one of our fiber optic trunks. A good chunk of the state was offline for most of a day. The worst part, of course, is that there's no copper to be had in fiber bundles.

You use your cell phone to call who? The police who's main lines are now dead? Or do you have the cell phone numbers of the police dispatchers that you can call directly?

I think I'm with Texas Fred on this one. I way have a cell phone, but 911 does NOT. Maybe dispatchers and individual policeman, but not 911.

So I'm set for burglars and intruders.

Considering that my first reaction is to deal with the threat at hand, and then inform the authorities... Yeah, I should be ok.

From an earlier commentary on my blog:

If someone is trying to kick in your front door, Gun Shy believes that you should call 911, after you have you readied your weapon(s) for the perpetrators eventual entry into your dwelling. Make sure that you inform the 911 operator that you are armed, so that information can be passed on to the officers who will eventually arrive on the scene because their job is dangerous enough without receiving friendly fire.

Well, lack of 911 means that the police will take longer to get to my house to arrange for transport of the body, is all.

I'm with TexasFred. The intruder has to worry about surviving me.

Even in MA, one's home is one's castle. Someone breaking in will be treated approximately as kindly as a barbarian at the gate.

Complete with boiling oil, if need be...

Cellular uses fiber trunks to connect to the PSTN. I am given to understand that cell service was affected for multiple carriers in the region as well.

That said, it's far more likely for a burglar to just cut your house line than it is for the whole backbone to go down (that only seems to happen when telco workers are on strike).

But I advocate EVERYONE keep a cell phone in your bedroom and NEVER take it out. No, I'm not saying add a line. Most newer cell phones (within the past few years) will access 911 even if they do not have a contracted carrier. Just keep them charged and you have an emergency 9-1-1 phone.
